Cosford Youth Club

receives extra

funding … T

he RAF Cosford Youth Club continues to go from strength to strength and is very pleased to announce

that they have been successful in a funding bid to the Station Charities and Local Initiatives Fund for £7,500. This grant will fund a further session of Youth Work delivery for the next 12 months. The source of this funding originates from a gain share of the profits received from the RAF Cosford Airshow in 2014, money that is earmarked for the benefit of both RAF and local communities.

The Cosford Youth Club is extremely popular amongst not only dependants of RAF Cosford Serving Personnel, but also local children and young people from Albrighton and surrounding villages. This additional funding will enable local children and young people to participate and socialise with children and young people from the Station. This type of activity is included as one of the aims of the Armed Forces Community Covenant which sets out to forge stronger links between the Armed Forces Community and Local Communities. Such links between the local and RAF communities serve to make a

difference to the lives of those children, young people and their families on both sides.

Mrs Sylvia Pledger Chair of Albrighton Parish Council said: “This is fantastic news for local people and their children we are really pleased that the Station were able to secure this money, we look forward to visiting the youth club when the new session starts”.

The Youth Club boasts over 170 active members who participate on a weekly basis in activities and events within the Club along with off site trips and residentials including international travel. Youth Workers in consultation with children and young people are planning the summer activity programme which will include an educational trip to Poland where they will visit Auschwitz and Schindler’s Factory, there will also be opportunities to attend day trips to participate in outdoor activities such as hill boarding, sailing, canoeing and archery as well as the popular theme park day trips. There is also a weekend residential in May to London where young people will be staying at the Union Jack Club which is a premier Armed Forces club with fantastic accommodation located in Waterloo which is ideal to explore the sights and British Culture.

Jean Hartshorne Community Development Officer said: “The Youth Workers here at Cosford do a fantastic job and are determined to continue to offer high quality Youth Work provision, we are always looking for innovative ways of improving delivery both in the quality and quantity of sessions for the good and benefit of children and young people”.

Cosford Youth Club is part of Airplay which is an RAF Benevolent Funded Youth Project providing support for children and young people of the RAF family aged between 0 and 19 years, operating on all main RAF bases across the UK. As part of this project, it has commissioned national charity 4Children to provide a network of trained youth workers on 25 RAF stations. Youth workers deliver activities and projects all year round creating lasting positive memories of their life on stations.
