Water technology alliance between GE and Kemira

A

formal distribution agreement has been struck that combines GE Power & Water’s

advanced water technology with global chemical specialist Kemira’s on-site services in a ‘seamless’ service for the global pulp and paper industry. It means that for the first time, GE’s latest advanced boiler and utility area cooling product technologies, as well as membrane-cleaning chemistry and the entire chemistry water portfolio is now available. Also included are the remote

monitoring and diagnostics products – including the InSight Knowledge Management Solution and TrueSense – and Novus polymers for waste-water treatment.

Pulp and paper manufacturers will have access to experts at GE’s Service Reliability Centre for 24-hour monitoring and support, all backed by GE and Kemira on- site expertise. “Kemira has long been

recognized as a technology leader, supplying process, functional and bleaching chemistry solutions to producers of pulp, packaging

Better copolymer binder for paperboard print surfaces

A ‘novel’ binder for coated paperboard and packaging applications has been launched by Germany-based Wacker Group. Vinnapas EF104 is a vinyl

acetate-ethylene-copolymer (VAE) dispersion that has been developed specifically for the coating of paperboard surfaces. The binder is easy to process and provides good print quality on coated paperboard. The binder is said to provide

good calendered sheet gloss, brightness and high opacity. Surfaces coated with the new binder facilitate a clear, sharp print image with bright colours and good ink gloss. The product offers exceptional dry and wet pick coating strength, which are

critical for good print quality and converting of coated paper and paperboard. “Our novel binder shows

excellent product properties and thus complements Wacker’s broad portfolio for paper and packaging applications,” says Rob Cuscino, marketing manager at Wacker Polymers. “Until now, oil-based binders were predominantly used for coating high quality paperboard, but our new Vinnapas EF104 now offers a VAE-based alternative.” More information from Wacker

and board, tissue and towel and printing and writing grades globally,” said Billy Ford, senior vice president, paper, Kemira. “This makes Kemira an ideal partner to bring GE’s water products and services to the paper industry and now positions Kemira with the broadest technical and product portfolio in the industry. After a successful 18-month pilot programme with GE in the Americas, we have increased the scope of our alliance to offer a comprehensive water treatment solution to the global pulp and paper market.”

Kevin Cassidy, general manager

for chemical and monitoring solutions, water and process technologies at GE Power & Water, added: “Pulp and paper mills use vast amounts of water to create an end product while also generating considerable wastewater. GE is eager to bring our water solutions to the pulp and paper industry, and Kemira is well-positioned to bring our advanced technologies to their customers.” More information from Angie Hansen, GE Power & Water. Better performing binders reduce consumption

High-strength styrene acrylic and vinyl acrylic binders that offer more performance with less binder for food packaging have been launched by Dow Paper Coatings. Rhoplex Diamond Styrene

Acrylic binders for paper and paperboard coatings enable mills to reduce binder consumption by up to 30 percent while maintaining strength and performance properties equal to or greater than conventional styrene acrylic and styrene butadiene binders. The new binder can also provide equivalent IGT dry pick resistance at 20 to 30 percent lower binder levels along with excellent process stability, high ultra-violet and heat stability,

and higher ink gloss. “Dow has been a long-time

trusted supplier of solutions to the global paper industry, and remains committed to accelerating innovative technologies that drive significant value for our customers,” said Bob Gargione, global business manager for Functional Coatings at Dow. “Doing more with less is a hallmark of sustainability and a driving force behind the development of our new innovations for paper and paperboard. Our products enhance performance and sustainability and help improve cost efficiency for our customers.” More information from
