how it has opened up a world of valuable knowledge for employers; while on page 20 the University of Edinburgh’s Rebecca Gaukroger talks about how the institution pioneered contextualised admissions, and what employers can learn from its experience.

ata is transforming the world. From our journeys online to our use of credit cards and debit cards,
mobile phones and wearable technology, the wealth of available intelligence is growing every second. While some of the data gathered is, arguably, useless, much of it is being applied with a view to enhancing our lives, and the world of recruitment is no different. From using data to improve attraction and hiring strategies, to applying data to better develop graduates, improve understandings of target markets or measure employer brands, an increasingly scientific approach is being taken in our industry. In this issue of Graduate Recruiter we focus on the power of measurement and data, looking at the different ways in which employers can use data, and sharing some practical tips...
Our lead article is a slightly futuristic look at people analytics – the science of using data to hire and manage employees (pg 8). It is an area in which US-based companies are leading the way, in particular Google, and we look at what the technology giant is doing in this space as well as talking to two American gurus about how people analytics is impacting on both finding top talent and on social mobility, and what it might mean for the UK.
The Smarty Train also pulls into AGR to share some very practical tips on how to be a smarty when it comes to data – or how to harness the right facts and figures and what questions to ask to make an impact (pg 12).
Contextual data is a growing area, and on page 18, Rare’s Raphael Mokades talks about
On page 26, Keren Mitchell of the TheJobCrowd shares some tips for companies who want to use data to improve the engagement of their graduate employee populations – including a look at why benchmarking is crucial – while on page 32 AIA’s Nathan Perrott explains why identifying the right data to measure is critical when formulating your attraction strategy. As he says, “Just because it’s out there, doesn’t mean you should be measuring all of it.”
We also look at how university careers services are using data, with viewpoints from Gary Argent at Graduate Transitions, as well as LSE and the University of Strathclyde, while on page 31, Prospects’ Jayne Rowley explores the problem of degree fraud.
Of course, that’s not all. There’s much more! And please, as always, let us know what you think and what you want to see more (or less) of in future issues. Enjoy the summer!
