complaints LAST month we reported that the parish office had received com- plaints that lorries were parking overnight in Grove Green. While the report was correct, the headline, not supplied by the parish council, erroneously implied that thiswas a case of the problem in Old Chatham Road, Sandling, moving to a new location. The parish council had no reason
to suspect that this is the case and did not intentionally suggest so in its report. Clearly the HGVs that used to park in Sandling must now be parking elsewhere, but there was and is no evidence that they have chosen Grove Green. The council did however ask that
Grove Green residents report such occurrences to the parish office. Bor- ough council ward member Cllr Wendy Hinder added: “I have had no complaints from any resident, but if this is becoming a real problem then it needs to be monitored and re- ported. I would appreciate if any res- ident is having problems they contact me.”
Dogs on leads
THERE have been recent reports in theWeavering Diamond Jubilee Or- chard of a few dog owners not keep- ing their pets under control. On one occasion a large dog wor-
ried three other
dogs. The three dogs were on leads but the large dogwas not.A fewweeks earlier three loose dogs ran from the orchard on to Weavering Street. Signs arenowdis- played requiring dogs to be kept on leads.
The parish clerk said: “The or-
chard is more often than not used re- sponsibly. However, dog walkers who cannot control their pets are definitely notwelcome.”

Concerns over the delay in road safety measures
MEMBERSwere disappointed that roadworks to improve safety near the Lidsing Road entrance to BoxleyWarren will not take place until late July.
The parish council is waiting for
KCC to install anti-skid surfacing and additional signs at this danger- ous bend on Boxley Hill and for yet another gate to be installed on Pil- grimsWay. Previous gates at the site have
been hit and demolished by vehi- cles four times in 20 months, most recently in March, less than 12 hours after it was installed. Without a gate, the parish council
has difficulty in protecting both the nature reserve (pictured) and visi- tors from anti-social behaviour such as fly-tipping and off-road
biking. A further consequence is that the Friends of Boxley Warren volunteer group which maintains the reserve has, after confrontations with off-road bikers, been advised to cease work until the entrance can be barred to ensure their safety.
Chairman praises volunteers
THE annual meeting of residents of Boxley Parish took place in San- dling on April 13. Parish council chairman Ivor Davies’s full report to residents is available on the council’swebsite and an abridged version will appear in the Downs Mail. Copies of reports submitted by organisations supported by the coun-
cil, and that of county councillor Paul Carter, are also on thewebsite. Thanking the volunteer groups for their reports, the chairman said:
“It is both interesting and pleasing to learn what has been done with the financial and other support offered by the parish council. “A little help from the council goes a long way when given to dedi-
cated volunteers. All residents should be very grateful to those who give up their own time for the public good. “Many residents tend to take things for granted. However, if all the volunteers in the parish suddenly stopped work,we would soon see a quick decline in local facilities.”
Get the latest council news
RESIDENTS can learn more about what the parish council provides and the organisations it supports through a new flyer available on the website and from the parish office. Supplies will also be given to coun- cillors and staff to distribute as they meet people. Some residents may find/have
found the flyers available at polling stations on the day of the election. Councillors were assured that this was permissible as both Boxley Parish Council and the contents of the flyer are strictly non-political. The flyers were suggested by Cllr
Martin Hinchliffe as part of a series of initiatives, including posters and contact cards, aimed at promoting awareness of the council’s work and also the council’s new email-based community alerts schemewhich tar- gets residents with news specific to their area. To receive alerts, please contact
the parish office at enquiry@box-
leyparishcouncil.org.uk, giving your email address and selecting one of the following four areas: Grove Green, Weavering and Woodside; Boxley village; Sandling and Forstal; or Lordswood andWalderslade.
Members discussed possible solu- tions including CCTV. Cllr Wendy Hinder expressed concern that all the hard work at theWarren was in danger of being ruined. This, parish council chair- man Ivor Davies said, was “very sad” and “the four-month wait for improvement works at the junction was potentially disastrous”. In recent weeks three motor bik-
ers have been given S59 warning for contravening road traffic regu- lations. Another biker did a quick turn around rather than be stopped by the PCSO.
Quality mark
THE parish council will shortly be publishing a leaflet on the history of the war memorial in Boxley vil- lage, thus marking the centenary of the outbreak of WorldWar I. It will be accessible on the coun-
cil’swebsite and printed copies will be distributed to schools and avail- able on request. The leaflet includes research by
local historian TraceyWinter-Biggs on the histories of those named on the war memorial, near which the parish council erected a plaque to commemorate the centenary. Pauline Bowdery’s final draft of
the leaflet was praised by parish councillors.
Libraries future BOXLEY Parish Council has lodged an objection in response to a KCC consultation on the future of library, registration and archive services in the county. Parish Cllr Dennis Hollands, who produced a report on the review, said one of the key issues was the potential transfer of some services to a charitable trust. However, he doubted that the desired savings could be achieved by this means. Councillors also shared his con- cerns about public access to the county archives and the mobile library service.
