Concern for man missing in Nepal

THE family of a 23-year-old Bearsted Parkmanwhowent miss- ing in the Nepal earthquake ap- pealed for him to get in touch and confirm that he is safe.

Matt Carapiet (left), from P e v erel Drive, had not been heard of since the quake struck, reg- istering 7.8 on

the

Richter scale. A former St Simon Stock RC

School pupil, Matt also uses the sur- name Karapetyan. Jill Carapiet posted on thewebsite Google People Finder: “Hi Matts, Hope you are safe contact us as soon as you can. Love Mum and Dad xxx.” His sister Christina also placed an

appeal on Facebook, saying: “If any- one has seen Matt Karapetyan re- cently in Nepal or on a trek, please

get in touch with me or send details via Google missing persons.” Communications in the areawere

badly affected, causing difficulties with phone and email contact. Matt, who graduated as a Bache-

lor of Architecture from Notting- ham University, had been working as an intern at Zaha Hadid Archi- tects in London. Hewas last located two days before the quake at Lang- tang National Park. More than 4,000 people were thought to have died in the earth- quake which caused huge destruc- tion in the capital Kathmandu. It also triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, where a number of climbers were killed and injured and manywere still missing. A contingent of British Gurkhas, including soldiers from Maidstone who were in Nepal to scale Everest to mark 200 years of service to the British Crown, were reported safe. Another team of Gurkha engi-

neers from Kent flew out to join the international rescue mission. To donate to the appeal go to www.dec.org.uk.

downsmail.co.uk Royal date for stonemason

MAIDSTONE stonemason Gordon Newton has had his latest work un- veiled – by Her Majesty the Queen. Mr Newton, from Downswood, who owns The Stone Shop at East Far-

leigh, has a long association with the National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne and was invited to make the plaque for The Wing, the Bat- tle of Britain Memorial Trust’s new visitor and edu- cation centre. He was invited to the official opening, car- ried out by the Queen, who was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. The £3.5m education cen-

tre, designed in the shape of the wings of a Spitfire, pro- vides interactive displays of what it was like to fly in a dogfight above Kent. Mr Newton said: “I was de-

lighted to be asked to make the plaque and honoured to be invited to the opening. Half a dozen or so members of ‘The Few’ – as Churchill named them – were able to be present and introduced to the Queen, so it was a proud moment.” The Stone Shop has been associated with The National Memorial for

more than 15 years and, in 2010, Mr Newton designed and built the iconic Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall that lists the names of 2,938 aircrew who fought in the battle as a lasting tribute to them all. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain so the an-

nual Veterans’ Day in July is expected to be particularly poignant. Each year prior to Veterans Day, the stonework at the memorial, in- cluding the “Seated Airman” looking out across the Channel, is cleaned and maintained by The Stone Shop.
