STEPHEN W. MITCHELL With great sadness the Commission reported the passing of Regional Program Manager Stephen Mitchell on July 19, 2014. Steve joined the CALEA staff in 1992, immediately following his retirement as a lieutenant from the City of Fairfax, Virginia Police Department. He assumed many positions with the police department, including accreditation manager. Steve was a military veteran and active in his community, where he spent his free time volunteering on veteran assistance projects.


Steve was a wonderful person that enjoyed interacting with the entire CALEA family. He excelled in his work and was a critical contributor to the advancement of professionalism within the public safety community. You could count on Steve to make a statement that was humorous but also made you think. We have many fond memories of Steve that will remain in our hearts, and occasionally those memories become conversations. He will be missed for his engaging personality, friendly nature and compassion for others. We miss you Steve…gone but not forgotten.
