Making the true choice for me
by Rachael Kane, singer, songwriter and singing teacher
FROM AN EARLY AGe I knew I wasn’t going to have children. Growing up, I would observe people with kids and think, that’s not for me. I love children, and I absolutely adore having them in my life, but I never had the true impulse to have my own.
Around the age of 39 or 40, when I was about to get married, a lot of people began questioning my decision.
My friends were having kids and they would enquire, ‘Do you think you’ll have kids?’ I began to wonder if I would be
missing out on something or depriving others in my life of the experience. At this time I really had to stop
and let go of what everyone else wanted and reconnect to what I knew was true deep inside me. I sought the support of a women’s health practitioner and she supported me to restore my clarity.
This was a defining moment where I felt completely empowered, free to be myself and not bow to what society expected of me.
I am almost 45 years old now and have absolutely no regrets. I have a great life with many wonderful relationships and plenty of time to spend with the community and my partner.
