RPS Group, the multi-disciplinary consultancy that has a base at Milton Park – advising on all aspects of environmental planning and development – received a huge boost in February when the London Borough of Newham granted planning permission for the £200 million London City Airport Development Programme in the Royal Docks.

RPS has been integrally involved in the project for several years, acting as the lead environmental consultants, coordinating the EIA, health impact and sustainability assessments supporting the application.

“I am pleased to say that the EIA process and all other aspects of our work for the airport have been found to be technically and legally robust,” said project director David Thomson. The news helped to boost the

company’s share price a whopping 45% in February.

In a month when the Footsie reached almost record heights, Serco Group – the Hook-based outsourcing company that operates public and private transport and traffic control on behalf of customers – saw its share price rise 44% to head the large quoted company section.

It followed a deal for a Serco- led consortium to provide management and technical support for operations with the Saudi Railway Company. The contract has a total value to Serco of £120m over five years and is the group's first major rail contract in Saudi Arabia. During the month it also agreed contracts to manufacture 75 new sleeper coaches for Scotland’s iconic Caledonian service.

New sponsor for the awards

Clarify - whose CEO Claire Edmunds (pictured) was a winner at last year’s Women in Business Awards– is to sponsor the 2015 competition

Edmunds received the coveted Woman of the Year (SME) trophy in 2014, and it seemed fitting to her to want to extend her association with the Awards by becoming a sponsor for this year’s scheme.

“We are delighted that Clarify has joined Deloitte, Blake Morgan and Barclays as our fourth sponsor for these prestigious awards. Claire is the embodiment of what it means to be a successful, entrepreneurial woman in business and she will be a great addition to our ranks of supporters,” said David Murray, publisher of The Business Magazine, which organises the awards.

Based in Theale, Reading, Clarify specialises in strategic business development. The company works with B2B enterprise organisations and dynamic technology start-ups that take complex, high-value propositions or disruptive new concepts to market.

Clarify’s niche focus means it is not able to directly recruit people with the complex sales skills it requires to deliver business development services to its clients. As a result, the company employs a recruitment team to understand the potential of candidates to ensure it is able to attract and take on-board the best people for its business development teams.

“People are key to our organisation,” comments Clarify’s head of talent acquisition, Rebecca Sewell.

“Sales is traditionally viewed as a male-dominated sector, but the nature of selling is changing and the processes we deal with are complex. Women make up 50% of the population – this is a significant pool of talent. We recognise women bring a valuable skill set to our profession and we hope these awards encourage more women to fulfil their potential, realise their ambitions and seek careers in this sector.”

“As a previous winner of the Women in Business awards, I understand what a valuable initiative it is,” said Edmunds,

“It recognises and celebrates the contribution female talent plays, not only within individual businesses but the significant impact it has on the wider economy. It is highly inspirational for women entering the business place and Clarify is proud to be supporting the awards this year and championing women’s achievements in business.”
