news 11 PwC rides the nation for charity

An ambitious team of 700 PwC staff are embarking on a national cycling challenge, covering a 2,500 mile national route to raise money for charity

“Ride the Nation” will set off from London on May 1, 2015, visiting each office in the UK network including The Channel Islands and Northern Ireland. Four national riders cycling the entire 2,500 mile route will be joined by regional riders relaying between each office, covering up to 130 miles in a day. There will also be local riders who will take part in fun rides at each office.

Riders will reach PwC’s Reading office on May 29, where there will be a local fun cycling event coinciding with the visit.

PwC’s Leighton Smith, a key organiser of the event and one of the national riders, has been overwhelmed by the number of staff signing up. “The support for Ride the Nation has been fantastic. The great thing about it is it includes everyone, regardless of sporting ability. I’m cycling the full 2,500 miles but we have riders who are covering anywhere from 30 to 130 miles.“

Sponsor Chain Reaction Cycles (CRC) are supplying the national riders with their exclusive carbon bikes, clothing, equipment and nutritional supplies for the event, as well as 700 nutrition packs for the regional riders.

“This is an amazing initiative”, says Damien Duggan of CRC. “Cycling is such a popular activity. For those who have already been bitten by the cycling bug it’s a great excuse to get on their bike and for those who fancy giving it a go they are guaranteed a great atmosphere and experience.’’

The activity supports PwC’s annual One Firm One Day; a single day where everybody in the firm gets to spend time in the community. Last year staff spent over 15,000 hours volunteering, raising around £80,000 for the PwC Foundation and other local charities. All funds raised by Ride the Nation will go towards local office charities, as well as the PwC Foundation and its race to raise £3 million this year.

“Whether you’re a keen cyclist or haven’t got on a bike for a while, Ride the Nation provides an opportunity for all our staff to get involved, from cycling to fundraising” says Miles Saunders, senior partner of PwC’s Reading office. “It’s a great way for our people to raise money for charity and do the right thing in our communities, whilst having a lot of fun along the way.”
