To Be A Man: A Guide to True Masculine Power Robert Augustus Masters PhD

Paperback 290 pages ____

A book that asks the question “Do all men have an inner rapist?” is a book that makes you stand up and take notice. To Be a Man is a revelation. Brave enough to examine the dark side of male power and ballsy enough (no pun intended) to ask the tough questions about the way masculinity is constructed, this book by Robert Masters PhD holds no punches.

With chapters on pornography, penises, breast fixation and rape, Masters does not shy away from controversial or thought-provoking issues. The book explores the idea of what it means to be a man: the entrenched stereotypes, social conditioning and cultural myths about masculinity are all examined with a critical but compassionate eye.

The Power of the Heart Baptist De Pape

Hardcover 232 pages ____

If you feel a deep, wordless yearning to follow your heart but are too afraid to heed it, this book is all the validation you need.

Baptist De Pape not only talks the talk, he walks it too. The author turned his back on a lucrative job working for one of the world’s most prestigious firms, after many years of studying and working towards a career in law. He was a signature away from that destiny, but something else was calling him. His heart.

This book is what his heart was calling him to (and the documentary film of the same name): a book about the heart, and the many reasons why it is so much more than a cluster of muscles that pumps blood around our bodies.

De Pape spent two years travelling the world, speaking to some of the world’s best known and most-respected names in the field of self-development, spirituality and human behaviour. All of the marquee names are here: Oprah Winfrey, Eckhart Tolle, Paul Coelho, Neale Donald Walsch, Maya Angelou, Deepak Chopra, Gary Zukav and more.

The scope of the book is breathtaking, with chapters dedicated to mindfulness, gratitude, intention, intuition, synchronicity, careers, health, love, relationships forgiveness and fear. The Power of the Heart contains everything you need to inspire you to action, and help you find your true purpose in life.

The Neurodharma of Love: Rewire Your Brain for Healthy Relationships Rick Hanson PhD

Audio CD (running time 6.5 hours) ____

The first thing that intrigued me about this audiobook was the title. The Neurodharma of Love. Neuro. That’s a scientific term which relates to the wiring of the brain, right? Dharma. Hang on, isn’t that a Buddhist concept?

Digging beyond the surface of sex, eroticism and arousal, there are sections devoted to discussions about relational intimacy, communication and what women need from men. A recurring theme is about the role of sex in forming deeper connections, and the author insists – contrary to popular belief – that softness in men does not equal emasculation.

To Be a Man calls for our rigid, traditional ideas of masculinity to be revised and updated: but to first do that we have to peer into the dark side of male power, where sex, anger, violence and shame lurk beneath the surface. This book wants us to redefine the true essence of masculine power, and to offer up new avenues for the expression of male fulfilment.

With a solid grounding in neuropsychology, The Neurodharma of Love is a comprehensive 6.5 hour program spread over five CDs. This unique program teaches how brain science, practical psychology and Buddhist meditation practices can help us experience greater fulfilment in our intimate relationships, starting with the most important one: the relationship we have with ourself.

The sheer scope of this program is way too expansive to cover in such a short review, but the bare essence is teaching us ways in which we can use the mind to change the brain; heal old wounds, strengthen current relationships and create a healthy balance of intimacy and independence.

With a combination of theory and guided practice, topics include how to develop self-worth, resilience and other inner strengths. With a focus on attachment and interdependence, the program helps us strengthen neuro- circuits of empathy while developing compassion, kindness and happiness towards ourself and others.
