PwC rides the nation for charity

An ambitious team of 700 PwC staff is embarking on a national cycling challenge, covering a 2,500 mile national route to raise money for charity

Ride the Nation will set off from London on May 1, 2015, visiting each office in the UK network including The Channel Islands and Northern Ireland. Four national riders cycling the entire 2,500 mile route will be joined by regional riders relaying between each office, covering up to 130 miles in a day. There will also be local riders who will take part in fun rides at each office.

Riders will reach PwC’s Southampton office on May 28, where there will be a local fun cycling event coinciding with the visit.

Leighton Smith from the Southampton office, a key organiser of the event and one of the national riders, has been overwhelmed by the number of staff signing up. “The support for Ride the Nation has been fantastic.

The great thing about it is it includes everyone, regardless of sporting ability. I’m a keen cyclist and will be covering the full 2,500 miles but we have riders who are covering anywhere from 30 to 130 miles.“

Sponsor Chain Reaction Cycles (CRC) is supplying the national riders with their exclusive carbon bikes, clothing, equipment and nutritional supplies for the event, as well as 700 nutrition packs for the regional riders.

“This is an amazing initiative,“ said Damien Duggan of CRC. “Cycling is such a popular activity. For those who have already been bitten by the cycling bug it’s a great excuse to get on their bikes and for those who fancy giving it a go they are guaranteed a great atmosphere and experience.’’

The activity supports PwC’s annual One Firm One Day; a single day where everybody in the firm gets to spend time in the community. Last year staff spent over 15,000 hours volunteering, raising around £80,000 for the PwC Foundation and other local charities. All of the funds raised by Ride the Nation will go towards local office charities, as well as the PwC Foundation and its race to raise £3 million this year.

“Ride the Nation is aimed at all staff – even if they’ve never sat on a bike they can get involved in some way, whether that’s cycling, fundraising,

Company leaders’ hopes revealed

The Government must provide better training for young people to help them get into work. That is the top issue businesses want addressed by the party that clinches power after the General Election, according to the findings of law firm Coffin Mew in its ’South Coast Business Manifesto’

Local firms want more money spent on road, rail and air travel; and say there should be a ’tougher stance’ taken on those claiming benefits.

The South Coast Business Manifesto is based on answers from company leaders relating to what changes and ’asks’ they wanted to see in the next parliament.

The ’asks’ are underpinned by the key drivers of economic growth, business success and making the region one of the best places to run a business, to work and live.

Nick Gross with the Manifesto

Nick Gross, chairman and corporate partner at Coffin Mew, said in light of the results: “The General Election campaign is in full swing, and promises are being thrown left, right and centre like confetti at a

wedding. But for all the promises it is difficult to feel whether politicians and candidates are listening to businesses.

“Businesses are feeling positive. And because they are feeling positive, they are looking for things which will enable them to grow, rather than just restructure, which has been the case for the past five years since the last election.“

He continued: “With investment being promised in other major UK cities we must ensure that our region is not disadvantaged. We have not been asked what we would like government to do. This Manifesto seeks to address this.“

Coffin Mew will also be hosting a series of events in the region during April to allow local MPs

or simply cheering colleagues on,“ said Ian Wishart, senior partner of PwC’s Southampton office. “It gives us the opportunity to do the right thing in our communities and make a difference to a lot of people’s lives.“
