Financial Services Centre of Excellence set up to drive industry
The South Coast Financial Services Centre of Excellence, an initiative developed by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), Hampshire County Council and Bournemouth Borough Council, has been launched to encourage collaboration between existing businesses in the sector and drive growth for the region.
The South Coast has been identified as strategically important by the Financial Services Trade and Investment Board – as a key area for growth as a result of its infrastructure, skills base and employers already successfully operating in the region.
The official launch was held at JP Morgan’s Bournemouth office, and attended by local businesses and dignitaries who heard about the goals of the centre.
The centre will bring together expertise of businesses in the region to enable them to share best practice, foster new linkages and partnerships for growth. The event also showcased the broad range of careers available within financial services and the opportunities and benefits of working and living in the South Coast area.
Attendees heard from JP Morgan, councillor John Beesley and economic secretary to the treasury Andrea Leadsom MP about the opportunities currently existing in the sector; what the growth areas will be in the near future; and what skills and qualifications are required to enter the sector.
Leadsom said: “A key part of our long-term economic plan
Oceanography initiative funded by Innovate UK
The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has won funding from Innovate UK that will see £2.9 million worth of collaborative research and development for Marine Autonomous Systems taking place in the Solent region.
The NOC will collaborate with nine UK partners from across industry and academia as part of three projects, with the hub of the activity happening at the NOC’s soon-to-be-opened Marine Autonomous & Robotic Systems Innovation Centre in Southampton.
Starting later this year the projects will see the NOC working closely with businesses to develop a low-
cost robot sub, a pressure tolerant rechargeable battery and an integrated, low-cost, shore-based technique for surveying the full water column.
Success in this project will enable long-term, low-cost survey and monitoring operations for a range of applications. These include offshore energy and deep sea mining prospecting.
Kevin Forshaw, associate director of innovation and enterprise at the NOC, said: “We are delighted to have secured this funding, and look forward to working alongside our industry partners to produce these exciting new developments.“
THE BUSINESS MAGAZINE – SOLENT & SOUTH CENTRAL – APRIL 2015
is to support a competitive financial services sector, not only in London, but also in the rest of the country, where around two thirds of the people employed across the sector work in a variety of roles.
“That’s why I’m delighted to launch the Financial Centre of Excellence on the South Coast which is a leading regional hub for financial and business services in the UK, providing over 130,000 jobs for the local area.“
The South Coast region of Hampshire and Dorset, incorporating the cities of Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester and the towns of Bournemouth, Farnborough, Basingstoke and Poole, employs around 243,000 people in financial and business services. Twenty two FTSE 100 companies have headquarters, major corporate centres or back-office operations in the region and it contributed £9 billion in economic output to the UK economy in 2012.
