* * * * * Refused Rescue and Lost Lives

Two of Barge OAKLAND’s Crew Thought Anchors Would Hold – Perished in Surf.

Gale Still Playing Havoc with Shipping Barge KICKERCOCKER at Nobska and the R. R. THOMAS Lost from Tow – Other Mishaps.

Highland Light, Massachusetts, October

15. – Two men who refused the offer of rescue by the tug to their barge parted lost their lives Wednesday in attempting to reach shore in a dory. The PAOLI’s two barges, the OAKLAND and the SUMNER R. MEAD broke away at the rising of the northeast gale. Three men were hauled from the MEAD through the tumbling seas on board the tug but when the PAOLI ranged along side the

OAKLAND the two men declined to leave, feeling that their vessel, which they had succeeded in anchoring would ride out the blow.

The OAKLAND began to drag her

anchors Tuesday within an hour after the PAOLI left her and Tuesday night she was only a few hundred yards from the breakers on the outer bar near the (?) River life saving station. The men on the OAKLAND Wednesday forenoon launched their dory apparently in the hope of being hurled through the breakers onto the beach, half way in however the little boat turned turtle and its occupants disappeared. It is believed their bodies will be thrown further up the cape. The storm was severe here all night

and Wednesday forenoon seemed to be increasing, with the wind still northeast and blowing 50 miles an hour.

16 October 1913 Save Four Men at Grand Manan St. John Scowmen Picked Up After Being Adrift Two Days in the Bay of Fundy

Eastport, October 16.

After drifting about in a disabled motor boat since Monday night, without shelter, food or water, four St. John scowmen were picked up Wednesday afternoon by two Grand Manan fi shermen off Whale voce and

Wednesday night were at the residence of O. T. Thomas at North Head of Grand Manan. They were taken back to St. John Thursday on the Canadian steamer ABERDEEN. The men whose names are Leo McLaughlin, Edward McLaughlin, George D. Cripps and Charles M. Newcomb, were given up for lost. They were the crew of one of three sand scows, which were loading at Crow’s harbor, below St. John. This crew started for St. John about 10 p.m., Monday night in tow of a motor boat, in the face of a howling gale. The second scow, which started later, passed them and noticed that they were having trouble with the motor boat. The third scow on arrival at St. John had seen nothing of the fi rst scow.

It appears that about 1:30, Tuesday morning, the crew of the fi rst scow decided to abandon it as the motor boat was broken down and gasoline nearly our and they took a small boat when about 20 miles off Partridge island and was to try and make the shore. They had gone but a short distance when they broke an oar and were left to the mercy of the winds and waves. They drifted about for eight hours, then came across their abandoned motor boat, which they boarded. The wind took the helpless boat well across to the Nova Scotia coast and Tuesday night changed and drove them back across and down the Bay of Fundy.
