has a new owner, but it is not known at this time what work he will want done before she goes back into the water.
There are 12 storage customers at the yard this winter and all need various degrees of work before spring arrives. However, when looking out and seeing the iced-in railway one wonders in which month Spring will arrive.
Coastal Boatworks in Edgecomb is busy rehabbing a 32-foot Bedford steel pleasure tugboat, which was built on the Great Lakes in 1991. She was purchased last summer and sailed up to Boothbay where she was hauled and brought to the yard. Once in the shop they began working on the hull and cleaning out the interior. The hull was sandblasted up to the deck. They are now getting ready to put an epoxy coating on the bottom and then two coats of paint. In the engine-room they pulled out the generator and 400 pounds of ballast and then steam cleaned the bilge. The generator will be replaced with an inverter. The engine has very few hours on it and she was given just the usual annual maintenance. Still to do, they will remove the windows and reglaze them, add a V-berth, update the batteries, add a hot water heater and pulpit and then paint the topsides and house.
Artisan Boatworks in Rockport is a
haven for the wooden boat lover. Just launched earlier this winter was FOXFIRE, which is a 25 foot full-keel Buz- zards Bay 15, which will make her home in Marion, MA this spring.
The major project underway is the refi t of a 33-foot Beals Island lobsterboat, which has a new owner. She was built by Vinal Beal in 1963 and was used for many years as a lobster boat. Her new owner will be using her for pleasure in the San Juan Islands in the Pacifi c Northwest. However before she heads west she needed some repairs made. They have replaced her forefoot, aft deck, some planks, electrical system and put in a new interior, which included a head. They also repaired the house top and fuel tanks. She is powered with a 383 Mercruiser with just 300 hours.
Sitting next to her is the schooner LEW- IS R. FRENCH’s yawl boat. They repaired 22 frames, by grinding out the affected sec- tion, laminating in new pieces of wood and then riveting it to the planks. They were next replacing the planks they removed, reinstall the interior and do some painting. They were also getting ready for their next big project, which is building an 85-foot mast. This means that they have to extend their building, which they are presently in the process of doing.
