Talk about busy, just walk into the me- chanical department at Billings Diesel & Marine in Stonington. Walking into this shop one can easily see that they have a lot of work ahead of them. In one bay is GALE WARNING, which is being repowered with a C-18 800-hp Caterpillar. She will also have her transom extended while in the shop. In the other bay is Andrew Gove’s UNCLES UFO,
which is being repowered with a D13 700 hp Volvo.
HARBOR PRINCESS, a Boothbay harbor whaleboat, is in having her three engines replaced. They are installing C18 800-hp Caterpillars. They are also replacing her genset, which is a 30 kW Caterpillar 2.2. There are also at least fi ve lobster boats outside waiting to come in and receive new engines. repowered will be the tug PENTAGOET from Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. They are going to replace her 16V92 De- troits with C18 670 hp caterpillars. They are also going to replace her two generators with two 30 KW Caterpillar 2.2. CHALLENGE, one of DMR’s patrol boats stationed in Portland, was in to have her engine serviced and some cosmetic work. They also replaced the windows. She is a Newman 46 that had been fi nished off by Wesmac. A Duffy 42 lobster boat is in to have a new platform put in.
The new 75-ton travelift has been or- dered and should be in place this May. The dock for the travel lift was done last winter.

split wheelhouse lobster boat for a fi sherman in Stonington. Her engine, a 700 hp Volvo, is in the boat, but not installed. Jeff was done below getting ready to fi nish out forward section. She will have a V-berth, head and a couple of storage lockers. She will have a 350-gallon fuel tank, four storage lockers under the platform and a 1,500-pound tank that will crank up three and a half feet just aft of the shelter. This boat will be completed and launched later this spring.
West Bay Boats in Steuben is fi nishing up one of their 31 footers for a customer from Connecticut. She will be fi nished out as a pleasure/tuna boat. Some of the work needing to be done includes installing a bow thruster and windlass, putting in the fuel tanks and exhaust system and maybe putting in an enclosed head. This boat will be done this spring. A Duffy 35 from Alabama was stored at the yard this winter. She will be coming in shortly for her annual maintenance. GINNY ANN, a Calvin 38, was also stored at the yard and she will be coming in for her annual maintenance soon. This will be followed by a 28-foot Bun- ker & Ellis, which needs to have her topsides refastened.
Jonesport Shipyard in Jonesport has
an Atlantic inside and getting ready to have a major rebuild. They will be replacing more frames, with a major problem on the starboard side . They will also take out the hog, build a new rudder, and add coaming supports on the port side.
Also in the shop is their hydraulic trailer getting her yearly maintenance.

This fall and winter the yard has seen a lot of work keeping the fi shing boats going. Most of the projects have been small and only taking up several days of time. The last boat hauled this winter was at the end of January, but the fi shermen will soon be getting ready as some will go back in mid- March.
