• Will Axtell has joined Penningtons Manches LLP as a corporate partner in the firm’s Oxford office. He was previously a partner at Charles Russell Speechlys, spending time in the firm’s London and Oxford offices. Prior to that he gained valuable in-house experience as a member of Vodafone’s corporate legal team working mainly on high-profile M&A deals. He trained and qualified at ‘Magic Circle’ firm Clifford Chance. Axtell advises on a wide range of corporate matters including mergers and acquisitions, fundraisings and equity capital markets (with an emphasis on AIM). He has particular expertise in the technology sector and is highly experienced at advising


on cross-border transactions. Barrister Camini Kumar has joined the top-ranked Oxford family team from 2-3 Hind Court. An Oxford classics graduate with a first-class law degree, Kumar was called to the bar in 2008. She practises in all areas of family law including financial remedy, children and domestic violence. She also has a particular interest in Indian divorces. Her pupillage was at 1 Hare Court where she worked on several leading cases. Kumar has co-authored articles on European family law and she lectures to other solicitors on family law matters. She is also a member of the Family Law Bar Association.


• Crowthorne-based SIRE, a leader in the provision of cloud-based business continuity


services, has appointed James Burrows. In his capacity as senior infrastructure engineer, Burrows will be key to providing high-quality technical support for both existing and new customers, especially those with complex migration projects. Prior to joining SIRE, Burrows spent over nine years with HP in a similar project implementation role. In addition to a degree in business information systems from Portsmouth University, Burrows holds a number of industry-recognised Microsoft qualifications.


• IT infrastructure provider Softcat has made a New Year’s resolution to hire more new staff in 2015 than in previous years, and is expecting 40-50 new recruits to join its ranks. Managing director Colin Brown says he hopes that Softcat's existing reputation as one of the UK’s best employers will help with attracting some of the best talent out there. "With five UK offices, we’ve plenty of scope for recruiting throughout the year, and we hope to find at least 40 new candidates by Easter.”

• In a series of management changes, Oxford-based accountancy firm Shaw Gibbs has appointed Peter O’Connell (above) as managing director. Graham Henley, who has led the firm since 2009 takes on the role of chairman. The changes take effect on April 1, 2015. O’Connell also leads the firm's corporate


finance team. He has a strong reputation for his work with owner-managed businesses, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, business disposals and financial restructuring. A skilled negotiator and strategist, he is highly regarded as a team player who brings Shaw Gibbs' specialist services together to provide clients with a truly comprehensive offering. He joined the firm as a trainee and progressed rapidly to become partner in 2005. Henley has been a partner since 1986 and managing partner for the past six years. Highly regarded as a mentor for firms, especially in times of change, he will continue to develop Shaw Gibbs’ strong relationships with clients and to build its profile as a full-service, highly-skilled regional firm.


• Cloud Distribution, a value-added distributor of next generation security, networking and storage solutions, has appointed James Sherlow as director of technical services. An acknowledged expert in cyber security, threat intelligence and the secure application delivery of content, Sherlow brings a wealth of experience to the company. He joins from Palo Alto Networks, a leader in enterprise security, where he was the cyber security solutions manager for Western Europe and Africa, and played an instrumental role in helping to grow the EMEA region, leading and building the security systems engineering team. In his new role, Sherlow will head up and accelerate the company's portfolio of value-added services, branded ‘Cloud Cover’, which include a wide range of pre-sales, implementation, maintenance, management and support, training and certification services.


• Paula Nielsen (pictured with director Malcolm Higgs) has been appointed by chartered accountants Whitley Stimpson as HR manager, a new role in which she will support the business with her broad range of both generalist HR experience and specialist knowledge of learning and development, talent management and organisational change. Nielsen is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (chartered FCIPD) and brings over 20 years’ HR experience to the firm. She has extensive commercial experience working with large corporations including Unipart and Atkins plc and is dedicated to the development of others. Her role will be to support the business across the Banbury, Bicester and High Wycombe offices in order to attract, retain, motivate and develop their people to achieve their maximum potential and provide an exceptional service to clients. As part of the HR committee, one of Nielsen’s roles will be to spearhead the recruitment drive in order to support the rapid growth of the business.
