The cockpit has to be functional and that begins with the two steering stations, one on the starboard side of the winter back and the other on the stern. In the middle of the cockpit will be the icebox, which will hold about 1,400 pounds of ice. Just forward of the box is the fi sh hold where they can put the fi sh and easily shovel the ice in.

How did he get on “Wicked Tuna?” Dave explained, “There’s a show on ev- erything. There is a show on swordfi sh- ing, lobstering and crab fi shing. Sandro (crew member on
TUNA.COM) and I have always discussed how they were missing out on tuna fi shing? It is exciting, fun, fast and the fi sh are big. One day the phone rang and it was a production com- pany and they said they were interested in doing a show on blue fi n tuna fi shing and they want it to be out of Gloucester be- cause of its historic signifi cance. ‘Would you guys like to interview?’ and I said, ‘Sure.’ They sent me a little camera in the mail and they wanted myself, Sandro, and my other crew member to answer some questions. We set the camera up on the corner of the boat, and we sat in
the captain’s chair, and answered all the questions that they had asked. We took that camera, put it in a FedEx box and sent it back to LA. They did this to several other boats and they put together a pilot. They then sent that out to all the networks, you know Discovery Channel, History Channel, and of course Nat Geo. Many of the networks said that they wanted it, but Nat Geo bid the highest. When they knew it was a go they came back to us and said, ‘We want to do the show, do you guys want to do it? If you do, we are going to come back out and interview you once again, but in front of cameras.’ Not only did they fi lm us but 10 or 15 other crews and shortly thereafter they got back to us and said, ‘Would we be interested?’ and we said, ‘Yes’ and signed on the dotted line.”
They will be air the fourth season beginning on 15 February. Dave added, “This year you are going to see a lot of fi sh caught, between all the boats. Some boats did better than others, but every- body caught a lot of fi sh. It is pretty fast and furious. There are two new boats this year, one rod and reel and one harpoon. Dave said that this will be an exciting season and with all the personalities that are on the show I am sure it will be. For those who would like to meet Dave and Sandro they will be at this year’s Maine Boatbuilders Show on Saturday and Sun- day (21 and 22 March).
