Maps published a complete 360-degree virtual experience of USS Constitution on Tuesday, Jan 20. Using Street View technology, Google Maps photographed the ship in fall 2014 to create an online 360-degree virtual experi- ence of touring Constitution in preparation for the ship’s scheduled dry dock restoration period, which begins in March 2015. “The timing was ideal,” said Cmdr. Sean Kearns, Constitution’s 73rd command- ing offi cer. “It enabled Google to photograph the ship pierside in her normal fully-rigged confi guration before we down-rig the ship and move her into dry dock for restoration work.”

The 217-year-old warship is scheduled

to undergo nearly three-years of restoration work during which time ‘Old Ironsides’ will have her copper siding replaced, along with major restorations to areas of the ship’s hull, interior, and stern.

Constitution joins a growing list of historical landmarks that Google Maps has available for online tours. Already available online are the Taj Mahal, The Louvre Muse- um, underwater reefs and street level views from around the world. To date, Google Maps has imagery available in more than 64 countries around the world.

“Adding interior imagery of the USS Constitution to Google Maps was the next step towards providing the most accurate, useful and comprehensive map of the world,” said Deanna Yick, Google Maps Street View program manager. “We hope this encourages curious observers to visit this historic ship in person one day.” Google Maps’ innovative technology

offers a unique view of most decks and spaces in the warship, including some spaces typically closed off to visitors, and will allow full virtual access of the landmark during the restoration. The virtual tour allows the public to view and experience the ship as she traditionally looks, fully-rigged at her berth at pier 1 in Charlestown Navy Yard. “This effort is particularly exciting be- cause not only will it allow the public to go on a virtual tour to areas of the ship that will not be accessible while Old Ironsides is in dry dock, it will also bring this virtual tour experience to millions of people worldwide who might otherwise never get the chance to visit the ship in person,” said Kearns. USS Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship afl oat, actively de- fended sea lanes against global threats from 1797 to 1855. Now a featured destination on Boston’s Freedom Trail, Constitution and her crew of U.S. Navy Sailors offer com- munity outreach and education about the ship’s history and the importance of naval seapower to more than 500,000 visitors each year.

chived naval records, photo collections, art, more than a quarter million Navy artifacts, the Department of the Navy library, nine museums including the National Museum of the U.S. Navy, and the USS Constitution repair facility.

Cox graduated with honors from the

U.S. Naval Academy in 1980, winning the Trident Scholar Prize (for a history thesis) and the History Department Prize for history major with the highest standing. He earned a master’s degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College with a history thesis, and was awarded a U.S. Army designation as a Military Historian. Cox’s last tour in the Navy was the Commander of the Offi ce of Naval Intelligence, from which he retired in November 2013.

The lineage of NHHC can be traced back to the advent of the Navy Department Library in 1800, when President John Adams instructed the fi rst Secretary of the Navy, Benjamin Stoddert, to prepare a catalog of professional books for use in the Secretary’s offi ce. Today, NHHC serves the Navy by con- ducting a wide range of support activities, including but not limited to: Collecting command operations reports (command histories), command cruise books, deck logs and select personal papers; analyzing and publishing historic documentaries and stud- ies; providing historic context to emerging contemporary issues; collecting and curat- ing naval artifacts of historic signifi cance; authorizing artifact loans to museums; and managing the Sunken Military Craft Act on behalf of the Navy.

U.S. Navy Divers Use Advanced Equip- ment in Search for AirAsia Flight QZ8501

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Toni Burton, From U.S. 7th Fleet Public Affairs

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- An eight-member team from Mobile Diving

and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 1 onboard USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) is supporting the ongo- ing Indonesian-led search effort for AirAsia fl ight QZ8501 with advanced Tow Fish side scan sonar systems capable of providing high-resolution images of the ocean fl oor. The Tow Fish side scan sonar system is used to identify objects on the seafl oor and provide accurate imagery for analysis. The sonar carries a passive listening device for detecting an acoustic pulse and is towed behind a vessel between 1-5 knots. The acoustic signal is then transmitted to a com- puter where the trained operators are able to analyze the feedback. “We can fi nd things as small as a golf ball and something as big as an airplane using different kilohertz spans,” said Navy Diver 2nd Class Daniel Clarke. “Should we fi nd targets out there, we will switch over to a very high resolution; we’ll go [over the area] very slowly and get very clear images. We can see everything on the sea fl oor using our computer”

Similar sonar systems have been crucial in past operations in 7th Fleet. In early 2014, U.S. 7th Fleet dedicated assets, including Bluefi n-21 Sidescan Sonar systems, to assist in the search for MH370 and the Korean ferry Sewol search and rescue operations. “We use this equipment quite often,” Said Clarke. “This type of equipment was used in stuff like fi nding MH370, or in the Sewol [South Korean ferry capsize tragedy], also with fi nding any type of other aircraft that might have gone down in the past.” As one of the U.S. Navy’s diving and salvage units, MDSU 1, stationed in Perl Harbor, is equipped to rapidly deploy specialized dive teams to conduct harbor clearance, underwater repairs and search and recovery operations in any environment. USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) is forward deployed to 7th Fleet and arrived in the search for Air Asia Jan. 3 at the request of the Indonesian government. Fort Worth is operating alongside USS Sampson (DDG 102), which arrived on station Dec. 30, to support Indonesian-led search efforts to locate AirAsia Flight QZ8501.
