AWRF PARTNERS with Florida Hospital For the Good of the Industry


A


t the recent AWRF (Associated Wire Rope Fabricators) meeting in St. Louis, the Association brought in Orlando-based Florida Hospital, and General Mark Hertling, to educate companies about the importance of health in the workplace and positive examples being set from the top down.


Tey call their focus Health Performance Strategies. Te initiative is representative of a national focus by associations around the country, many of them in the industrial space, on overall employee health and employee productivity, as well as the connection that personal health has with rising health care costs—and the impact those costs have on businesses, both large and small. Florida Hospital, one of the country’s largest


non-profit health care providers, with 22 campuses serving communities throughout Florida, hopes to provide AWRF members with the tools and information, through this initiative, that they can use to lead long, healthy, and productive lives. Health Performance Strategies focuses on eight principles designed to motivate people to adopt healthy lifestyle changes: Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal Relationships, Outlook, and Nutrition. By encouraging everyone, from their own staff, their patients and their community leaders and area businesses—even entire cities—Florida Hospital is on a mission to advocate for preventative measures that promote a healthy lifestyle. Tey believe that by helping people to gain a better understanding of how longer, more enriched lives can be achieved through simple lifestyle changes, they can stem the flow of rising health care costs that are crippling the nation. AWRF brought Florida Hospital into the fall 2014 meeting as a way to continue its devotion to and support of the productive enhancement of its members’ careers and lives. General Hertling, who presented on behalf of the organization, has been representing Florida Hospital since February 2013—leading programs for Global Strategy, Physician Leadership Development, and the Health Performance Strategies initiative. Prior to joining Florida Hospital, Hertling served for almost four decades in the U.S. Army. At the time of his retirement, he was Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe, where he led over 40,000 soldiers, cared for over 100,000 family members, and partnered with the armies of 50 countries in Europe.

Hertling commanded units at every level, to include


the Army’s 1st Armored Division in combat, and is one of a few individuals who have deployed three times with the “Old Ironsides” Division to combat. He has also commanded training organizations at the National Training Center in California and the Joint Multi- National Training Center in Germany. We had a chance to speak with him after the meeting on a variety of perspectives related to the Health Performance Strategies program, and how he feels the implementation of this initiative by Florida Hospital will benefit AWRF, and hopefully the industry overall. “Florida Hospital’s Health Performance Staff has begun


working with AWRF in a preliminary ‘know your numbers campaign,’” he explained. “Once the executives from all the AWRF organizations are aware of their numbers in the area of cholesterol, blood pressure, percentage of body fat, etc., and they see how those numbers relate to susceptibility to disease and illness, they can do a better job in correcting their nutrition, improving their exercise programs, reducing their weight, increasing their muscle mass, reducing their stress, and improving their sleep.” Hertling added that all of these factors contribute to a healthier workforce, improved productivity, and substantial reductions in health care costs.
