Newsagents give up shop
MAIDSTONE newsagents Vilen- dre (Vic) and Nalina Patel have been making their own headlines after retiring from Fountain Stores after 27 years behind the counter. The well-known couple (pic-
tured) took over the Tonbridge Road business at the age of 32 and have worked alongside each other, 14 hours a day, during that time. Just a week into retirement, Mr
Patel told the Downs Mail he was still surrounded by papers as he tried to finalise details and close the business. He told the Downs Mail: “I’ve
been used to getting up at 5.30am every morning to do the papers, which is just as well, as I’ve now got plenty of paperwork to go through. Then we will be able to start thinking about how to spend our retirement!” The shop has been taken on by another husband and wife team, Yasi (25) and Thusha (32) who started out in Dartford, running their local Londis shop. And Mr Patel believes they will
be well suited to Maidstone and the area, where customers have made them and their two children so welcome. He said: “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. It’s a really friendly area.” The couple will be making the
most of the opportunity to relax and take a holiday. Mr Patel, who was involved in a serious road accident while deliv- ery papers in recent years, said his retirement had become necessary because of his injuries. He added: “I would like to have carried on for another five years, but I wasn’t able to work as long since the accident and my family suggested it was time to stop..”

News Protected pine must stay
A PROPOSAL to remove a pro- tected pine tree at 31 St Francis Close, Penenden Heath has been refused. The planning application said
the treewas leaning over the roof of the building, causing worry to residents. The proposal also included raising another protected Scots pine 10ft above the roof of the house because it was causing ex- cessive shading. Nicholas Terry, who lives nearby in Heathfield Road, ob- jected. He wrote: “By granting the crowning of one and reduc-
tion in height of the other will mean me being overlooked by most if not all of those upper floor flats facing out on to Heath- field Road. “They form part of the tree preservation order to afford all the residents privacy and in the submitted application they ap- pear to be in good health as the applicant has not listed any decay.”
Maidstone Council’s decision

Injured pensioner abandoned
AN 80-year-old womanwas left stranded with a broken arm and leg at her home inMaidstone. It is understood a man called at the elderly woman’s home in Loose
Road, claiming to be answering her call for a gardener. The woman, who had not made the call, is understood to have gone into
the back garden to confront him when she fell. The man is said to have got her back inside before leaving. Anyone with information is asked to call DC Gabriel Chandler on 01622 604177.
