The two-storey farmhouse still shows its log origins inside, while a stone’s throw away stands the remains of the first home that was built by the origi- nal homesteaders when the land was settled. The Odlums are working to salvage what is left of this little house. They have built a concrete slab to set it on and plan to repair the whitewashed mud plaster on the exterior. Populating the garden is a massive
undertaking. They have started with garden beds laid out in a pattern that reveals the initial stages of a long-term plan of formalized plantings on either side of a small central orchard, where they are putting in a variety of fruit trees. They have enclosed the beds in railway ties to keep the prairie from creeping in and have filled these spaces with plants that take well to the windy, sunny, dry conditions: poppies and
