large, white-painted, terracotta pots line the side of the house, dressed this year in orange Dragon Wing begonias, copper-coloured coleus and bronze-leafed ornamental grasses. The pots are flanked by well-behaved gout- weed that, under Shaaron’s tutelage, stays inside its allotted space. The pots were part of her daughter’s wedding decoration at the Fairmont a few years ago. They have been recycled happily in Shaaron’s garden and are now filled with good memories as well as flowers. This part of the garden offers a tran-
sition between the cool shade of the front yard and the warm sunny areas of the back. The transition is assisted by a large planting of false spirea and ferns that are brightened with shots of brilliant orange impatiens this year. They help ease the eye as it travels toward yellow spikes of ligularia ‘The Rocket’. In the back yard against the house,
an old dog run is covered with cooling vines of Engelmann’s ivy. It is making its way around the corner and up the side of the house, where the large maple-shaped, purple and green leaves of castor beans are making their first annual appearance.
