yard doesn’t have to be big to be magic. Small spaces can hold hidden charms that capture the


imagination. Such is the garden of Alan Shepherd and Verna Judge, former co-owners of Steppin’ Out, the popular restaurant on Provencher Avenue that they closed earlier this year. The garden is a lot like the restaurant


was; warm and friendly, cozy and filled with pretty surprises. It hides behind a century-old house on Machray Avenue, shaded by giant elms. It distinguishes the street, thanks to the fieldstone gate- posts that stand guard by the sidewalk entrance to the home. The fences are thickly covered by


Virginian creeper offering privacy from peering eyes. At one end of the garden, a fieldstone-walled greenhouse extends the growing season. It has a kind of Old World look about it, as does the toolshed that occupies the other side of the path leading to the back lane. It, too, enjoys the luxury of the fieldstone half wall.
