t’s a vast yard covering one and a half lots on an expanded natural water feature. It’s owned by Dr.
Brent Nicholayachuk, an orthodontist in Winnipeg and Selkirk, his teacher wife Lisa and their three kids. This garden has been built with a
family in mind. On the extra lot that Brent and a neighbour bought togeth- er and split down the middle, Brent has
added a fully equipped sports
court for his growing sons, Tanner and Dylan. At the street end of this extension is a two-storey structure. The walkout bottom floor faces the lake and is used to store sports and other equipment. Brent loves golfing, skiing, snowmobiling and motorcy- cling not to mention mountain biking. Tanner and Dylan spend hours out

on the wonderful sports court prac- ticing at basketball or volley ball, or just plain tumbling around. The court is surrounded by easy care raised gardens containing Karl Foer- ster grass, dogwood and low growing evergreens. A paved patio leads off the court, centred by a natural gas-fueled fire pit and Adirondack chairs. Near the garden entrance is a stunning planting of Russian sage and firecracker plant. The contrasting colours of purple and orange stand out in harmony with the multi-hued brick of the home’s earth- toned exterior. A patio of etched concrete laid out as
tiles surrounds the home and leads to the big surprise: a little mountain set in the middle of lush green lawn that has had only the best of care and most nourishing of foundations in which to grow. A couple of large clumps of rudbeckia glow in the sunlight. Keith Lemkey has outdone himself

in creating this garden. He has preserved the view of the lake while adding his own water feature in the form of a huge waterfall with a water slide down its side and ending in a very large swimming pool. A couple of natural gas firepits add light and heat to keep the pool functional well past the usual garden season. The cream and green variegated

leaves of dogwood shrubs add contrast to the pristine lawn, and a mountain ash with its orange berries delivers year-round interest. Lombardy poplars and blue spruce, Mugo pines and ciste- na cherries combine to provide texture and colour. Nothing has been overlooked or left out. Electrical outlets stand ready here
