plants. This year, all the black and blue salvia was gone so she settled for a new magenta variety, which she planted amid her white zinnias and together with some chocolate cosmos. “They smell like chocolate, too,” she marvels of the cosmos. She also has a crush on a pretty peach-coloured coreop- sis, almost hidden as more aggressive plants have grown up around it. She will try both again next season. The garden is filled with an essence of

warmth, reflecting Sharron’s personal- ity and Hymie’s too. Hymie, the lawn and water guru, loves the garden and enjoys “puttering around the yard.” They have lived in this house for 38 years and for 25 of those years they have been putting down roots, so to speak. Shaaron is pretty and petite, and so very enthused about the plants that add a note of joy to the garden. The way flowers look in the garden delights her so much that she hates to cut them for use inside the house. “This

is my cottage,” she says,

adding that when her father passed on (her parents were both gardeners), she and Hymie gave up the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach in favour of the garden. While the lawn still occupies much of the backyard space, so that the little grandkids will have a place to play, you can see the plants encroach- ing ever

so slightly. After all, they

bring so much happiness with them, who could ever object? P

Papyrus hangs over the walkway. Shaaron loves roses. The white pots, part of her daughters wedding decorations, are filled with memories.
