Indiana’s Top School Bus Rep Says Goodbye, for Now
It was the last day on the job for Pete
Baxter last month when STN reached him in his office at Indiana’s Department of Edu- cation. After 34 years in the industry, Baxter had decided to retire, publicizing it shortly after completing his duties as steering com- mittee chair of the 2010 National Congress on School Transportation. As soon as the announcement came out, one of his fellow state directors offered some words on his time with Baxter. “I have worked with Pete since May 1990,
when we met at the 11th National Con- gress on School Transportation. Since that time, we have spent thousands of hours together as state directors and friends,” said Wyoming’s D. Leeds Pickering. “Pete cares deeply about pupil transportation is- sues on a national level as well as on a local level in Indiana, always considering what is best for the student riders.” Tere was no single event that caused
him to make his decision, just a realiza- tion that it was time, according to Baxter. Te transition into retirement will be bit- tersweet, as he will miss certain levels of fulfillment he experienced while on the job. But Baxter has no plans of disappear- ing off the school bus map, something that to him seems impossible. “Once you’ve been in this industry, and
work with people from every facet of it, it’s difficult to walk away from it and not want to continue in some fashion. It’s more than just a job, and when you can be involved in something like that and
contribute in all the ways you can, even after leaving your position, it’s something I’d like to do,” said Baxter. He has no immediate plans though,
but, as mentioned, there was no short- age of compliments from those around the country and within his state. Jim Scroggin, president of the School Trans- portation Association
of Indiana and
transportation director at Southern Han- cock Community School Corporation, called Baxter a “dear friend” to his asso- ciation’s membership and stressed that he will be sorely missed. “Pete has been a colleague of mine
in the school transportation industry for many years and has helped to form me into the director I am today,” said Scroggin.
“Speaking on behalf of the
STAI Board of Directors, I would say Pete Baxter is a man of profound integrity who has and will continue to impact the school transportation industry for many years to come.” n
