STUDENTS ESCAPE BURNING BUS ON FREEWAY Roughly three dozen people, including children, parents and teachers, escaped injury

after their school bus caught fire on a Southern California freeway. Te bus broke down in the middle lane and burst into flames. Although no one was hurt, the students on board the bus were very frightened. “Te first thing I saw was a bunch of smoke coming from the front window and then I heard screaming,” third grader Trisha Khandelwal told the local ABC News affiliate. Teacher Cathy Peters said smoke started to pour into the cabin from the front of the bus, so the adults opened the emergency doors and moved the kids to the back. At first, they were afraid to exit the bus since they were in the middle

the United Motorcoach Association over the constitutionality of an amendment to last year’s U.S. Department of Trans- portation appropriations bill. Te Murray Amendment, as it has been called, prohib- ited the Federal Transit Administration from enforcing the charter bus rule against Seat- tle-based King County Metro Transit, which was violating the initial rule by transporting fans to Seattle Mariners baseball games and Seattle Seahawks and University of Wash- ington football games, even though UMA member Starline Luxury Coaches was avail- able to cover the lines. UMA President and CEO Victor Parra called the decision a “huge victory for the industry.” ■

technicians, the National Transporta- tion Safety Board issued a Safety Alert to advise parents of the dangers to young children on aircraft when not restrained in an approved child restraint system or device. Te Safety Alert notes that preventable injuries and deaths have oc- curred in children younger than 2 years who were unrestrained. “While the NTSB would still like to see a federal regula- tion requiring the use of child restraints on aircraft, we continue to recommend that, when traveling by air, all parents purchase an airline ticket for every child in the family and place each child in a size-appropriate restraint system to en- sure that everyone travels safely,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman.
