REFRESHER COURSE I read, with great interest, the Special Report: “Moving Violations: Child
Behavior Management on School Buses” (May 2010 issue, page 28). Al- though much of the information is nothing new to those of us who have been in transportation for years, it was well worth revisiting. After reading this article, it occurred to me that many of our school administrators have either forgotten, or are too young to understand, these basic principles. Many of them, as well as concerned parents and guardians, have come to believe the driver is some sort of all-seeing, all-knowing individual capa- ble of maneuvering a 10-ton bus on busy streets and seeing, hearing, and knowing every possible infraction of behavior that goes on every day the bus rolls. My supervisor agrees with this perception. At her recommendation and request, I am writing to you to ask your
written permission to reproduce this article for distribution to our division school administrative staff. Tis piece is exactly what I need to reinforce the dialog I have been having with our school administrative staff respon- sible for supervising and dealing with unacceptable behavioral practices on school buses. Tank you for a well written reminder of how bus drivers are heavily tasked everyday with such huge responsibility.

THE ‘BELT’ WAY Just read your May 2010 article, “Safety at What Cost?” Good informa-
tion, thoughts and logic. I particularly enjoyed your bottom line: “Just imagine for an instant that one of these lawsuits drives a manufacturer into bankruptcy, or even out of business entirely, and the trickle-down ef- fect that could cause. Ten imagine how many more children could die or be injured.” You clearly were paying attention and remembered the ‘bottom line’ to
the presentation — “’Belts’ and Litigation” — I did at the NASDPTS confer- ence in Myrtle Beach, S.C., two years ago. Glad to know you agree! Now let’s see how many other people will join us.

YOU’RE MAKING US BLUSH Your fine magazine is exemplary. I try not to miss an issue and peruse
every article. I have 44-plus years in public education: teacher, principal, and mostly administration.
