Until After Then

THE TOMMY TALTON INTERVIEW

by Michael Buffalo Smith Tommy Talton began his career in a rock-

ing “garage” band down in Florida called We The People, back in the 1960’s, before meet- ing Scott Boyer and forming Cowboy. Cowboy had a great run as one of the first bands on the Capricorn Records label. A few years ago, Talton assembled a hot group of players near his home in Georgia, dubbed The Tommy Tal- ton Band, and continued making excellent music and recordings. His latest, Until After Then, was recently released on the Hittin’ The Note label. We spoke with Tommy about his hot new record.

Congratulations on the release of what I feel is your finest album to date. Where was it recorded and how long did it take to record from start to fin- ish? Thanks Michael, I recorded this just north of Birmingham, Al. in Graysville at Gintown Studios which is owned by David Keith. [David also plays drums on the record and in the Tommy Talton Band]. I had recorded my last CD, Let’s Get Outta Here at David's also. It's very comfortable for me and the two of us work great together - same approaches and likes when it comes to music and recording. We had started the first one on May 7th of 2012 and when May 7, 2014 rolled around I thought how cool it would be to start a new - or continue really- a new project on the same

day. So, we did! On May 7, 8 and 9 the project began with me laying down acoustic rhythm parts for new songs I had ready, some had lyrics, some not. It was not finished until Sept. 20, I think it was. But, that is deceiving, it didn't take 4 months to record, I would go over to the studio for a couple days in June a couple days in July and so on through the next few months.

Who all played on the album? All the horn parts were done in one day by Brad Guin, sax, and Ken Watters on trumpet. Kenny Head [from Talton Band] put some organ and piano on a few songs and Matt Slocum recorded organ on the title track, "Until After Then," with me and David. On July 18, 2014, David Hood, bass, Billy Ear- heart, keyboard, Kelvin Holly, guitar and Bill Stewart, drums came in and we cut 3 songs that day ("Distant Light" "I Keep My Mind On You" and "Real Sugar)." On August 8th, while gigging in Mobile, Al. with my former Cowboy partner Scott Boyer, we were staying with Rick Hirsch, original guitarist for Wet Willie, and Rick , NC Thur- man on piano, and I began messing around with a musical jam that started out as a Pro- fessor Longhair trip. I pulled out my dobro and we played and I spouted out words off the top of my head and suddenly we had a tune titled "Love U A Little." We went down stairs to Rick's studio and cut it, Rick called drum- mer Pete Wehner, Frankie Nattola put some
