MOTORING VW GOLF SV CONTINUED.........

yet still delivers comfortable ride quality. the power delivery is smooth and responsive, the gearshift slick and precise and the steering is well-weighted for good road feedback. the sV is a hard car to fault in driving terms – it does everything beautifully. slightly longer than a standard Golf but slightly

shorter than a Golf estate, the sV offer a neat blend of day to day practicality and dynamic driving. It scores highly for versatility. the three rear seats split fold, and also slide forward by up to 180 mm to vary load or occupant space as needed. Loadspace has been increased by 76 litre (to 500

litres) compared with the outgoing Golf Plus, and this can be further boosted to 590 litres by sliding the rear seats forward. Folding all the seats provides 1,520 litres of space. this clever use of internal space gives the sV a distinct edge over most rivals in the sector. no doubt about it, this new Golf variant is a

formidable package with strong appeal to family buyers or business users.

CITROEN C1

Citroen has a well-established reputation for providing economical value-for-money hatchbacks, and though competition from european and Far eastern rivals is more intense than ever, the French company is still a dominant force in the sector. It’s C1 underlines this point – a neat nimble little

number with very low running costs and prices starting at £9,895. Well-kitted and with a three year warranty, the C1 looks smart and has a light, easy driving feel. My recent 5-door test version was in Flair Puretech

guise, a higher-spec model priced at £10, 935 and powered by a 1.2 litre 82 hp petrol engine, with a slick 5 speed gearbox. the 0-60 mph time is quite nippy at 11 seconds, top speed is 106 mph. that is decent performance in the class but the C1 is more focussed on economy. the combined fuel figure is 65.7 mpg and

its 99g/km emissions mean no road tax to pay. standard equipment on this model includes variable

power steering, speed limiter, tyre pressure monitor, reversing camera, front and curtain airbags, air conditioning, daytime running lights and 15-inch alloys wheels. that is a great specification for the money. the C1 has an eye-catching look, with a cute front end design and a sleek profile. the mainly-glass rear tailgate gives good load access though the boot is quite small, just 196 litres and. while the rear seats drop down, there is still a deep step to surmount when loading bulky items. the cabin is nicely designed with controls all neatly to hand and a large central dial clearly visible through the steering wheel. A central touch-screen for audio and air-conditioning functions is simple to use and with gloss-black inserts on the console, the cabin is attractively styled. seating is very

£650 – and accommodation is adequate for four adults, with reasonable head and leg room. On the road the C1’s agility and handling is a delight. It corners well, ride quality is good, and it is easy to park. not all small hatches have personality but this chic French model does and it wins you over with its overall ease of use and ultra-low running costs.
