Dartmouth Through Time

old Dartmouth photographs! three years ago I was sitting in the Flavel with Wally Fleet, then chairman of the Dartmouth History research Group, manning a table of old photos of Dartmouth at the south Devon AOnB’s 50th anniversary presentation. thumbing through the photos in front of me I could picture the same spot as it looked now and voiced aloud my comment about re-photographing some of the old images. At first glance so many of the old photos of Dartmouth seemed very little changed over 150 or so years. A few months later at a History Group meeting,

plans were being made for two evenings of presentations of Dartmouth history to celebrate the History Group’s 21st
anniversary the following year in
October 2012. In my absence Wally volunteered me to produce a series of “then and now” Dartmouth photographs. It turned out to be just the motivation I needed to push me into the project which had initially sparked my interest. Over the next year, with the support of Dartmouth Museum, I accessed their digital photos and replicated about 90 of them, creating a 20 minute DVD presentation of Dartmouth then and now for the Anniversary celebrations. the DVD has now been shown to a number of different groups in Dartmouth, but because of copyright issues with the music, was not produced for sale. However, a number of people mentioned how difficult it was to take in all the detail of the photos when each was only projected for a very short time and the idea of a book was born. the eventual outcome was an agreement last september to produce
