DART NOTES
many support staff from the RAF and the Royal Navy. The Tactical Air Traffic Control team from RAF Brize Norton, for instance, plays a huge part in ensuring that the air displays are on time and run safely. Jason added “It’s like putting together a very
complicated year long jigsaw but thanks to the professionalism of the crews and support staff and the fact that the Dartmouth Regatta is one of their favourite destinations we have one of the best free displays in the UK.” This year was special because it marked the 50th
Anniversary of the Red Arrows. Jason was able to take the opportunity to mark the occasion with a presentation of a specially engraved Regatta plaque on the day of their display. He is also looking forward to another anniversary next year. “It is the 70th anniversary of 771 Squadron the Royal Navy’s Search and Rescue Squadron who operate the famous Orange and Grey Sea King’s from RNAS Culdrose. But it is also their final year of operations as they are due to be decommissioned in April 2016, so we want to make sure that we give them a big welcome and ensure we mark the occasion in a suitable manner.” Jason also added “We sometimes have to reconsider our plans when an opportunity arises such as the possibility of getting the Canadian Lancaster this year. It was a great shame that mechanical problems meant that neither Lancaster was able appear at Regatta but it will not stop me looking for an opportunity to bring something special to the Regatta.”
