Computing Microsoft Announces Windows 10

the end of 2015. We take a quick look at what to expect and whether version 10 will improve upon the much maligned Windows 8. Where is Windows 9? So what happened to Windows 9 you ask? If I were to put my marketing hat on, I would say that Microsoft is simply putting some space between Windows 8 and the new version of Windows. Windows 8 has been unpopular – it did not sell well and those people who adopted it generally struggled with it. Not releasing Version 9 sends a statement that it is a new start. Return of the Start menu Although Windows 10 will not be released for a year, we do know some key facts about it. Firstly the Start Menu is returning. Those people on Windows 8 will have felt the misery of using a system where there is no proper start button and start menu – or traditional desktop. It has made finding programs and information difficult and is the major complaint that I hear from Windows 8 users. Integrated Voice Recognition It looks as though Windows 10 may have fully integrated voice recognition so you can “talk” to your computer. Microsoft’s “voice” is likely to be called Cortana. Before you go thinking this is all space age, it’s no different from Apple’s “Siri” on iPads and iPhones and Google’s Talk App. It may not be new but it is a leap to have fully integrated voice into an entire operating system.

Security Improvements Microsoft constantly patches and improves security – it’s one reason why your computer does Windows Updates. Windows 10 is likely to have dual tier security and much better protection for user data. This is all good news – but remember that every Windows computer needs a full Internet Security package such as Bit Defender or Norton Internet Security. Is it Worth Waiting For? If you are on Windows 7, then it’s well worth skipping Windows 8 and hanging on for Windows 10. You may even decide to stay on Windows 7! For those on Windows 8, Windows 10 will bring huge benefits. it is not known if Windows 8 users will have to pay to upgrade. Even with a price tag, I expect for most people, it will be a small price to pay to wave goodbye to Windows 8!
