Fair proceeds boost projects

CHEQUES totalling more than £5,000 have been given to organi- sations in Bearsted and Thurn- ham for community projects. Two cheques, each for £2,000,

from the Bearsted and Thurnham Fayre, were presented by local res- ident Major Jack Crossley to Kent Scouts and Bearsted Cricket Club. These will go towards ongoing

work at the Scouts’ Lower Grange Farm and towards the new artifi- cial wicket on The Green. Major Crossley presented a cheque for £100 to Malcolm

Kersey, husband of Kate Kersey, towards the costs of the revised edition of her book about residents from Bearsted and Thurnham who served their country during the two world wars and, finally, fayre organiser June Wilkins handed £100 to Major Crossley himself (pictured) towards the work of charity Help for Heroes. Bearsted and Thurnham Fayre is

a hugely popular event on the vil- lage calendar and raises thousands of pounds each year, which is ploughed back into the commu- nity.

This year’s theme was Super- heroes. Work is already underway planning next summer’s event.

Mall plan submied

THE first phase of a plan to give Maidstone’s Mall shopping centre a re-vamp has moved a step closer. Owner Capital & Regional has submitted a planning application to Maidstone Council to deliver the first stage of its town centre vision. The proposalswere unveiled at a

public exhibition earlier this year. If planning permission is granted, the phase will entail the lift lobbies being improved and a renovation of the public toilets. Shops will be reconfigured to

meet modern retailer requirements and two entrances will be created on King Street and Gabriel’s Hill. Capital & Regional is still refin-

Grave register

DETAILS of the graves in the large churchyard at Leeds are being used to create a comprehensive register of resting places and epitaphs. But Mr Brian Hardystill needs

the details and wording from more headstones. He adds: “As well as the grave details, we need the location, which can be fixed by reference to the plan on the noticeboard in the South porch of the church.”
