Lights event
BEARSTED is to hold a special switch-on ceremony for this year’s Christmas lights. New lights have been obtained
for Madginford and the lights for the Green’s Christmas tree have been repaired and fitted with a timer. LED lights are to be tested in con- junction with the existing stars on the Green with a view to purchas- ing new lights for the Green in 2015 and new lights for Madginford the following year. It is hoped to hold a special switch-on ceremony when Cllr Pat Marshall will perform the honours. There will be a united service of
carols on the Green – on Wednes- day, December 17 starting at 7.30pm near the cricket pavilion – at which everyone is invited.
Elderly lunch
THIS year’s Christmas lunch for the older people of Bearsted and Thurnham will be held on Satur- day, December 13 at Madginford Hall.
Numbers are limited to 80 and
food and drink will be provided, courtesy of the parish council. Holy Cross men’s group generously act as waiters for the occasion and en- tertainment will be provided. Anyone wishing to attend or

New wicket laid
THE new all-weather wicket has been laid on Bearsted Green. The wicket, which measures 30m
by 2.74m, was laid by Durasport from Leicester, an English Cricket Board approved company, and will be used for training during the summermonths. The wicket, which has a 10-year lifespan, has cost almost £10,000, of which the parish council has do- nated £4,000, the Bearsted and Thurnham Fayre committee £2,000. The club raised the rest.

ory of Bearsted’s most famous crick- eter, Alfred Mynn. Nominations need to be from a member of the village, accompanied by a CV, which will then be vetted, approved and confirmed by an ap- pointed panel. Those eligible will have carried
out volunteer work in the village for the benefit of its residents or given exceptional service to the village community. Generally people undertaking
paid employment, even when it is exceptional, are not recommended for approval and it is preferred that a candidate’s contribution should extend beyond a single area. Nomi-
Fireworks
BEARSTED’S annual fireworks display went off with a bang! The event, held on the Eliza-
beth Harvie field,was verywell attended and a great success. The weather was kind and
parish council chairman Richard Ash thanked members of the council for “a real team effort”. The council is to make a donation to the Jubilee Church and Maidstone Round Table, who both of provided marshals. All profits will help local or- ganisations, who can apply to the parish clerk.
Residents can nominate volunteers to succeed the 2013 award winners

BEARSTED’s communitywarden AdamMcKinley is leaving to take up a new post in youth work. Adam (29), who recently mar-
ried, will work with young peo- ple closer to his home inAshford. Announcing his departure to
the parish council, Adam said he had thoroughly enjoyed his 10 years working for KCC – the last two and a half spent working with the people of Bearsted Martin Sherwood, community

Youth club needs volunteers
VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help run Bearsted Youth Club. The club, which meets in Madginford Hall on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm, has suffered from diminishing num- bers as well as a reduction in helpers. Cllr Geoff Licence, who runs
the youth club, said some parents had offered to assist on a rota basis but the offers had not mate- rialised. The youth club is for young people attending secondary

school or college, aged between 11 and 18 years old. Meetings are informal, with an opportunity to play pool, table tennis, Wii, Xbox and board games. Play area ready WORK is now complete on the Bearsted Green play area.A new sur- facewas put down in July, just in time for the school holidays, and now the play equipment has been replaced. Mid Kent and Faversham MP Sir
Hugh Robertson was being asked to perform the official opening.
Lacrosse on Green
LACROSSE could soon be the latest sport to be played on Bearsted Green. The village cricket club has been approached by Maidstone Lacrosse Club to use the pavilion changing rooms from October 2015.
