Autumn 2014
Chief Executive’s Foreword
CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S FOREWORD
I
am honoured to be able to welcome you to the LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair and to introduce this publication in my first year as Chief Execu-
tive of LAPADA. The Association is now in its 40th year and remains
the largest UK trade association for art and antiques dealers. Our dealers span a wide spectrum of speciali- ties from jewellery to furniture to silver to fine art and more. I feel fortunate in my new post to get to know personally these wonderful people who are all pas- sionate and specialists in their respective fields. It is fascinating to chart the evolution of the art and antiques trade over the past four decades through Huon Mallalieu and Mark Bridge’s insightful articles printed in these pages. Through the boom times and the hard times, the market has held firm and remains an important part of our industry and culture. Much has changed over the past 40 years but LAPADA strives to respond to the evolving needs of the mem- bers we serve. The LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair is now in its sixth year in Berkeley Square. Having been a visitor to the fair for many years, it is exciting to now be involved be- hind the scenes and to see the extraordinary effort that goes into staging such an exceptional event. I am most grateful to Fair Director Mieka Sywak and Fair Organ- iser Emma McVittie and their team for the hard work all year that culminates here. My regard also extends to the 100 exhibitors whose effort and dedication re- sults in the impressive display of objects from every period from ancient to contemporary. The LAPADA Fair continues to push for excellence in all areas of art and antiques and we wish to celebrate that with our inaugural Best Stand Awards which is sponsored by Edmond de Rothschild Private Merchant Banking. The Selection Committee comprised of ex- perts, collectors, sponsors and journalists will select not only the most impressive presentation by an ex- hibitor overall, but single out items of particular qual- ity, rarity, historical importance and condition to be awarded with a category prize. Please look for the signs around the Fair from September 24th for the winners!
I encourage you to refer to our Directory of Mem- bers in the back section, where you will also find the Code of Practice and more about the Association and the services it offers to the public and the trade. On behalf of LAPADA The Association of Art & An- tiques Dealers,
Rebecca Davies Chief Executive
