system. It is an immunomodulator, and is anti-inflammatory, anti- oxidant, and protects the liver.

Dogs and cats alike (horses too) can benefit from having co- conut oil that is raw, organic and unrefined added to one of their daily meals and a clean-sourced Omega-3 fish oil (the one you choose should be from 100% wild caught fish), in one or both meals. Both types of oils boast a powerhouse of anti-inflammatory properties along with improving cognitive function in older dogs, lowering blood pressure and triglycerides, providing support for dogs with kidney and heart disease, promoting weight loss in overweight dogs, and have nutritive value for anti-inflammation.

Adaptogens are a great resource to supplement their daily diets

If your dog or cat has low energy that doesn’t coincide with an illness or physical inability to move comfortably, Adaptogens can offer tremendous support for increased acwtivity level. Maca root is one of my favorites for daily use to help stimulate energy in aging pets or pets with lackluster when it comes to play or exercise. Eleuthero root (Eleutherococcus) is a wonderful circu- latory herb that helps to prevent lactic acid build-up in athletes creating more stamina for increased energy and endurance during exercise.

Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis) is native to tropical southeast-

ern Asia, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and the Mascarene Islands. It is also known as Indian gooseberry, and is one of nature’s richest sources of antioxidants. Its juice has about 20 times more vitamin C than orange juice. In Ayurveda, Amalaki is considered one of the most powerful rejuvenating medicines. In Sanskrit, Amalaki means “the sustainer,” and it’s used to nourish the blood, skin, liver, and bones. It is also hypoglycemic, making it an ideal choice to add into a daily supplement in the case of insulin resistance.

Other Adaptogens that are known to help with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance

American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is an adaptogen that helps control metabolic syndrome and diabetes while helping the absorption of vital nutrients from the diet. Ginseng also increases production of interferon, the body’s own virus-fighting chemical, as well as production of antibodies, which fight bacterial and viral infections. It is hypoglycemic, an immune amphoteric, a bitter tonic, and a mild stimulant to the central nervous system. Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum), also known as tulsi, is an adaptogen with studies that have shown it to have effects on low- ering blood sugar levels that are similar to standard oral diabetes medications. It is anti-microbial, antioxidant, neuroprotective, an aromatic digestive, a relaxing nervine, a cardiovascular tonic, an expectorant, and an immunomodulator.

¹ Adaptogens are remarkable natural substances that help the body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance. They increase the body’s resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors, and promote normal physiologic function. They are unique from other substanc- es in their ability to restore the balance of endocrine hormones, modulate the immune system, and allow the body to maintain

optimal homeostasis. Knowledge about adaptogens dates back thousands of years to ancient India and China; but serious scien- tific study did not begin until the late 1940’s when Soviet scien- tists explored the benefits of these substances in fighting stress, preventing and reducing illness, maintaining homeostasis, and strengthening the body.

Adaptogens are nontoxic, produce a nonspecific defensive response to stress, and have a normalizing influence on the body. As defined, adaptogens constitute a new class of natural, homeo- static metabolic regulators. Modern research has proven that many of these herbs are important medicines that can be used for the prevention and treatment of a variety of common ailments.
