Future of park

PARISH councillors will meet members of the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership to firm up details of how the White Horse Wood Country Park could be man- aged independently. The group, based in Maidstone,

is keen to get involved in the possi- ble joint management of the site by Thurnham, Detling and Stockbury parish councils. It is intended that by taking on the running of the site, the commercial use of the park as a burial site could be limited.

would amount to at least 212 extra car journeys through the village every morning and night if develop- ment of the grade three agricultural landwas approved. She added: “This may look like a

neat little development bordered by the rail line, but it ismy understand- ing that the agent for the potential

developer is also involved in the plan for Woodcut Farm. It doesn’t take a lot to realise the implications for the land in between if this goes forward.” She told councillors the Bearsted

and Thurnham Society, of which she is a member, would be asking the Campaign to Protect Rural England to work with them in opposing any potential development and asked the parish and Joint Parishes Group to do what they could. Borough councillor Nick deWig- gondene said: “This concerns me greatly.Weknowthe council’s plan- ning officers think this is a suitable site and the planning committee could be given a recommendation to

Police cuts ‘hiing services’

COUNCILLORSwere concerned to learn that cuts to the police budget were hitting services. Cllr Ted Denham was reporting

on a meeting of parish councils with the police. He said: “There is phenomenal pressure on the police from budget cuts. Officers say they are doing what they have to do, rather than what they would like to be doing.” A case in point, he said, was the

revelation that there was no police presence at the county show this summer. “We saw a spike in crimes, with crooks armed with spanners stealing tow bars from cars and bits being stolen from stands and cars. Cllr Denham agreed to make en- quiries with Headcorn Parish Council about how volunteers might assist the police in the village by monitoring the speed of traffic.

approve.” Cllr deWiggondene sqaid he would likely oppose any applica- tion of that size on that site. Chris James, head of Thurnham

Infant School, said: “In conjunction with the recent expansion of St John’s Primary School in Grove Green, Thurnham school isnowable to take more children from the area.” But he said plans for more hous-

ing would have an effect. “If this de- velopment went through they would have to build another school andwe have no room to expand our school. Ifwe build bigger campuses it becomes a bit like factory farming and that’s not whatwe are about.” The parish council will monitor the situation closely.
