Bringing Christmas spirit to village green

BEARSTED Green could be turned into a winter wonderland if the land- Report foliage

and potholes RESIDENTS are reminded they need to chop back foliage which overhangs their property and could cause nuisance or danger to drivers and pedestrians. The council can take enforcement

action if homeowners neglect to keep their trees and hedges in check.

Residents are being urged to re-

port breaches, as well as instances of potholes and faulty street lights via the Kent County Council web- site. There is a facility for people to include photos of foliage or pot- holes, which should be more than two inches deep, when they report the issue on the website. If people do not have internet ac-

cess or do not wish to get person- ally involved, Cllr Alan Rowe will report matters on their behalf.

Crime report

OCTOBER was a busy month for criminals in the village, with 17 crimes reported to the police. There were five house burglaries, one non-residential burglary, four thefts from vehicles, four shoplift- ing offences, two thefts by “find- ing” and one instance of bilking – making off without paying for fuel.

Lacrosse idea LACROSSE could soon be the lat- est sport to be played on Bearsted Green. The village cricket club has been approached by Maidstone Lacrosse Club who would occa- sionally use the pavilion and changing rooms during matches.

Fireworks event

BEARSTED’s annual fireworks dis- play will take place a the Elizabeth Harvie Field on Saturday, Novem- ber 1, last entry 7.15pm.

New PCSO

BEARSTED’s new PCSO is Timon Gurr, who is new to the village and replaces Jim Stevens.

lord of the White Horse decides to play Santa. The parish council has agreed to

the lighting of a tree on the Green, where licensee Simon Hagenwants to create a Victorian-style street market in conjunction with the Christmas farmer’s market, with craft and gift stalls and a full festive atmosphere. The three-day event would be run

over a weekend, with profits going to support local children’s charities. MrHagen said: “This is an idea to

bring the businesses and the com- munity in Bearsted together. We

have lots of restaurants and bars, shops and businesses and it is an opportunity for everyone to come together and make use of the Green in the run up to Christmas.” Mr Hagen has produced an event

plan and the parish council has agreed to lend its support to the event in principle. However, there are concerns that there is insuffi- cient time to organise it in time for this Christmas. Cllr Pat Marshall, who is instru- mental in organising the Bearsted

and Thurnham Fair, said: “I think it is a really interesting and wonder- ful idea, but I fear that time is short.” The fair committee has offered to

help Mr Hagen out and the parish council’s environment committee was due to consider the matter fur- ther as the Downs Mail went to press. The parish council is also plan-

ning to erect Christmas lights in Bearsted, but the details have yet to be finalised.

Call to keepwarden Adam Dogwarning

THE parish council is to write to KCC expressing their support for the vil- lage community warden Adam McKinley. Members of

the parish coun- cil expressed dis- may at reports the service could be reorganised and potentially

reduced, with wardens being asked to covermore than one area. Cllr Tim Licence proposed the

council write to cabinet member Mike Hill pointing out how impor- tant the warden was in Bearsted, particularly in relation to the elderly and the youth. Adam (pictured) is very much in-

volved with the village schools, the youth club and spends much of his time visiting the elderly and house- bound, the council heard. Memberswere unanimous in sup- porting the motion that a letter be sent to KCC pointing out the com- munity warden provided a valuable and important service to the village.

DOG owners are being asked to take care when walking their ca- nine companions on land owned by Bearsted Woodland Trust. Adam said when dogs were al-

lowed off the lead, fouling could occur and be undetected by the owners. He said: “The first anyone knows is when you or I step in it. Please keep an eye on your dogs at all times and clean up any mess.” If a dog attacked another dog,

this was a matter for the dog war- den, he said, not the police. How- ever, if a dogwas to attack a person or the owner of a dog become vio- lent towards another dog owner, the police should be summoned.

Annee to improve market

PLANS are afoot to make Bearsted’s monthly farmers’ market even bigger and better. The parish council has appointed Annette Lebreton as the new manager. She has worked for Medway Council for 12 years and is in- strumental in organising events such as the Dickensian Christmas. She is also a board member of the Kent Farmers’Markets Association and has extensive experience in running farmers’ markets. She told the parish council: “Bearsted Farmers’ Market has huge potential. It is in a fantastic location and just a few things could make what is a great market even better and more successful.”
