CONTRIBUTING WRITERS WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?
David Auten, Bill Biss, Blake Beckcom, Chris Carpenter, Jessica D’Nalga,
I had three older brothers who loved to experiment on me. Someone was always waiting to
jump out or grab me as I reached around the corner of our dark basement, already terrified, searching for the damn light switch. It still gives me chills to think of it. Funny, how fear stays with us, isn’t it? It can paralyze you or it can be a powerful motivator. It all depends on how you respond to the
adrenaline-pumping experience. Fear of flying, fear of water, fear of clowns or any of the myriad others, can produce paralysis or its polar opposite, flight, the powerful survival mechanism. Running away is a wise course of action in many cases, but there are also times when you just have to turn around and face whatever it is that is haunting you. Coming out of the closet for many, can still be a terrifying experience. Though we have learned
a great deal, there are many, who, in the doing of it, are faced with demonization very close to home. The one place you are supposed to feel safe. Two of our interviews reminded me of that circumstance this month; Karamo Brown (page
34 and Jane Lynch (page 30). The two discussed their unique lives and the all-to-familiar and challenging journey as they came out. Though many years separate their experiences, a central theme runs through both—fear—and the eventuality of having to face it in order to live fully. There are many every day who suffer grave consequences for just being who they are. Familial
rejection and LGBT homelessness continue to be a problem. Evidenced by the staggering statis- tics put forth by the new study by the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law, regarding the foster care system and LGBT youth in Los Angeles. Some of the findings are as follows, “the study revealed that nearly 20 percent of youth in foster care in Los Angeles County identify as LGBT. That’s double the number of youth [homeless] among the general population who so identify. The number staggers me and reminded me that there is still much to do—everywhere. Facing fear and then rising from adversity, is something we have become relatively good at.
It’s easy to forget, however, that not everyone has that experience. There are many LGBT youth out there that are still struggling to find their way in the face of other’s fear and judgements. For them, we must continue to fight against those who would demonize them, simply for being who they are.
