THE HAUNTED HOTEL THE HAUNTED TRAIL THE SCREAM ZONE

by tim parks It’s that time of year again, when our minds are focused on all

things Halloween-related. Whether it’s deciding which costume will best show off your true inner personality, or buying a ticket to the latest horror flick or scarefest; it’s every adult’s moment to revel in fantasy and the macabre. As a part of that tradition and for the past two decades, San Diego

residents have been tricked and treated to a veritable trilogy of terror in the form of The Haunted Hotel, The Haunted Trail and The Scream Zone. Running from Friday, September 26 through Saturday, November 1, each venue offers its own brand of special scare tactics. THE HAUNTED HOTEL in Downtown’s Gaslamp District, utilizes

its eerie setting to full effect, employing actors to flesh out any num- ber of ghoulish types, each hell-bent on scaring the bejesus out of those who dare cross its threshold. Can your heart stand the terror of the “Hellevator,” Slaughter House, Dissector’s Autopsy Morgue, Doll Island or The Subway full of maniacal clowns? THE HAUNTED TRAIL in Balboa Park is a mile-long walk, sure

to turn even the most butch and muscled gym bunny into a mass of quivering goo. Clowns with chainsaws hiding around each bend and a school bus filled with maniacal murderers to escape from on the Haunted Ghoul Bus. Plus, re-creations of some of the most hor- rific scenes from American Horror Story and a 3,500 square foot maze teeming with creepy crawlies called, “The Experiment,” amongst the many other fearsome frights to be had. THE SCREAM ZONE, located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, is a

hybrid of the two a-horror-mentioned screamfests, comprised of an outdoor Haunted Hayride and Zombie Paintball. Oh, and good luck trying to find your way out of The House of Horror and The Chamber.
