“A chair is still a chair Even when there’s no one sitting there But a chair is not a house And a house is not a home When there’s no one there to hold you tight, And no one there you can kiss good night.”
Pulling together our annual House and Home issue is always an interesting challenge. What
expert do you talk to? Who is the best qualified? What would readers find most edifying? These are some of the questions I asked myself. I used the title loosely and came up with some interest- ing options. I hope you enjoy them. I chose the musical reference above because of our conversation with Paloma Faith. She
talked about becoming more comfortable in her own skin and finding her home there, after many years of not feeling that way, on page 34. She also talked about poor choices in men and how that shook her sense of self. Hmmm, can anyone relate? There is a sweetness and more than a tinge of melancholy in her new album, but for the most part, it’s all about rising out of what you know and moving on. I ran across the new FYI Network show Rowhouse Showdown and thought it would be an
interesting angle to take. There are so many DIY possibilities on the networks, but I thought this one had an interesting angle. While the featured designers were doing the renovations, they actually had to live in the run-down properties they were assigned. I managed to snag two of the “gay persuasion” featured designers and a couple, who filled us in on the challenges—Geoff and Josh. I think the quote from the article starting on page 38 I like best is, “When Josh first opened the door, I thought to myself, what a shit hole! What did we get ourselves into?” How many times have we walked through our respective doors and thought, “What the heck have I gotten myself into?” Luckily, the biggest challenges usually have the biggest payoffs. Melissa Etheridge reminded me of what a woman can accomplish with sheer force-of-will and
determination. There was a powerful dynamism pushing the women of the ’80s, in particular, the lesbian community and she helped me to remember how much has changed because of their care and strength. They were there supporting and fighting alongside us when we were sick and stood there in our place, when we couldn’t anymore. Death is a powerful motivator and we are “one hell of a team” when we have a common cause. We managed to carve out our right to exist and thrive, through much suffering and pain and built a solid home together in this country. We are here, we are queer and just a little more used to it… and better because of that battle. And, we have Etheridge’s music there to remember it by. Enjoy where you live my friends and if you don’t, maybe it’s time to think about a move—or at
least a remodel. In my experience, a sledgehammer can be a whole lot of fun.
