“It’s the happiest I’ve ever been in
adulthood, basically. I spent most of my adult life wishing that I was a child again. Now, I’m really happy to be an adult because I’m in a relationship with that person.”
I’m glad you are happy now. I’m happy now. We’ll see how long it lasts, though (laughs).
The song “Impossible Heart” seems purely autobiographical. Will you tell me about creating this one? Yeah, basically I wrote that when I was… I told you that I have fallen for someone but I wrote that when I was in a situation where I had fallen for somebody and had some complications as usual. I was a bit angry with myself and just thought, “When will I just have an easy life?” I’ve always tended to end up in difficult situations. In the middle eight, where it says, “So if the seas separate us” meaning if its long distance and “time is against us” meaning I’m ready for it and you’re not. Or “if you don’t like girls” like even just falling for a gay man… basically, the summary of it all is, why do I constantly fall for things that are difficult? I thought, “Maybe she keeps falling in love with someone who is not in love with her.” Yeah, I’ve done it a few times. It’s a general song about all the different
reasons I’ve fallen for people that aren’t easy options. It seemed to me that you were channeling Shirley Bassey on the opus, “The Bigger You Love (The Harder You Fall).” Your voice is so powerful and phenomenal on this. Thank you. Yeah, I wasn’t channeling Shirley Bassey any more than I usually am. I just actually recorded a duet with Shirley Bassey for her new album. It’s Shirley and me for her 60th anniversary in music. Marvelous. Can you tell me the name of the song? It’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”
Excellent. Now, your recording of “The Bigger You Love (The Harder You Fall)” is one older song on A Perfect Contradiction that has some history to it. Were you already familiar with this song? When I used to work at Agent Provocateur, we used to play that Sisters
Love album, all the time. People used to come in and love it, but nobody had ever heard of it. They were the back-up singers for Sly and the Family Stone and I think they only released one album of their own music. It was one of the albums of our time that didn’t get the recognition it deserved. I love the idea of resurrecting something that was obscure when it came
out. It’s funny. People always think that I wrote it because nobody knows it, but it’s actually a song from the ‘70s. You definitely do a remarkable job with the vocals. Thank you. It’s my moment where I’m like, “I can sing!” (Laughs) “The
Bigger You Love (The Harder You Fall)” was actually produced by a 17-year old boy, who is Raphael Saadiq’s nephew. His nephew is called Dylan. He produced that and got that sound together himself. He also played the guitar solo on “Love Only Leaves You Lonely” that is so amazing. He’s 17 and he actually finished school that day and came from school to the studio and did that work. I just think that’s something unheard of, at that age. I think he’s such an amazing young man. That is incredible. I have to tell you…your fashion sense is divine, it’s so colorful, exotic and sophisticated. I would love to see what Diana Vreeland of Vogue’s past, would have done with you. I LOVE her! She was amazing. When I saw that documentary on her, I
bought all the books and I basically spent the next six months quoting her and answering any questions in response to what I found in the books. I don’t think Vogue has done a fashion spread on you… but I think you’re due for it. No. I haven’t had that yet.
Oh well, I’m keeping my fingers crossed on that. I think you’d be marvelous. Me, too.
Now with your tour, you’ll be in the U.K. through the end of this year. Yet, you do have a break in September and October. I imagine you’ll be flying to New York and L.A. around your October 7th release date for A Perfect Contradiction? Yeah and I’m trying to schedule in a tour of the U.S. in September. It’s
currently being routed now, so as soon as it goes up on my website, there will be dates. Okay, super. Thanks a lot, Paloma. Thank you. That was a really nice interview.
