mine what is “appropriate?” What is the line between apposite and censorship? Sheri Wilner’s Kingdom City is an examination of those very questions and is an exploration of the casualties of censorship. A high school production of The Crucible is cancelled because it is deemed inappropriate by the school board and members of the local community. The play was inspired by actual events that took place in Fulton, Missouri and the cancellation of its produc- tion of the play by Arthur Miller. “I am in awe of how playwright Sheri Wilner explores both sides of a culture war between artistic freedom and religious values with such honesty, humor and intelligence. I look forward to watching this tremendous cast and creative team bring her vibrant new work to life,” said Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley. King- dom City plays at the La Jolla Playhouse, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive from Thursday, September 4 through Sunday, October 5. REGRETS ONLY One of San Diego theatre’s favorite mulit-taskers,

Jessica Johns, is making her Diversionary directo- rial debut with Regrets Only, the Paul Rudnick social comedy set firmly in the George W. Bush era. The story features Tibby McCullough, her high-

powered attorney husband Jack and her GBF (gay best friend) fashion designer Hank Hadley, who just recently lost his lover of 40 years. Hank and Tibby are preparing for a night out, when husband Jack returns proclaiming happily that he has been tapped by President Bush to help draft a proposed anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment in Washington D.C. The announcement stuns Hank, forcing him to reconsider his 40-year friendship with Tibby and Jack. To illustrate his dismay, Hank enlists his friends to strike in “a day without a gay,” which just happens to occur on Tibby’s daughter’s wedding day…and as they say, “let the hijinks begin.” Regrets Only is at the Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Boulevard through Sunday, September 21. BRIGHT STAR Steve Martin and Edie Brickell have been touring and successfully collaborating for a while now, one of the results

was an award for their “Love Has Come For You” at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014. Their association has continued to bear delicious fruits and luckily for us, we in San Diego will be the first to taste another of the sweet results of that partnership. Bright Star is a play based on the song by the same name and tells a beguiling tale set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1923 and 1945. Billy Cane is a young soldier just home from World War II who meets Alice Murphy, the brilliant editor of a southern

literary journal. Together, they discover a powerful secret that alters their lives. Bright Star features 25 new songs by Martin/Brickell and will be directed by Tony Award-winner Walter Bobbie. The show will play at The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park from Saturday, September 13 through Sunday, November 2. For tickets and more information call 619.234.5623 or go to theoldeglobe.org.
