Poppies and Shadows; yet more stunning entries
James Hutchinson, Ecology Manager at Fairhaven Golf Club, won 1st prize in our June ‘Poppies’ photo competition against some stunning entries.
Twenty-five years of
... and excellent service
It seems hard to believe that, this year, Terrain Aeration will be celebrating twenty-five years of deep probing and earth shattering, all with a touch of grumpiness that has almost become their hallmark.
The husband and wife team of David and Lynda Green first came to prominence in 1991 with the original Terralift machine, which arrived in the UK on the back of a ‘chocolate lorry’ from Germany; “there were chocolates at the front and the Terralift at the back,” recalls David.
Over the years, the Terralift has had many modifications, whilst David’s engineering skills
He commented; “I crawled along the wet grass so as not to damage this chap prior to taking the snap. Glad I did!” And I bet he is, as he won a £100 gift voucher to spend in the Pitchcare shop.
Our July ‘Shadows’ theme attracted another excellent standard of entries and, whilst we had a chuckle at Peter Craig’s entry, we couldn't shortlist it for a couple of reasons; firstly, that the theme was ‘shadows’ not ‘The Shadows’; and secondly, The Hurlingham Club’s Grounds Manager wasn’t born when this photo of Hank B and his cohorts was taken so, therefore, it was unlikely to be his own work!
Praise for County
David and Lynda Green
have seen the design and build of other Heath Robinson-esque models, including Scamper, Airforce and Tracker, all designed to carry out specific tasks, but all with the main aim of very deep aeration.
Other machines have come and gone, but the quirkiness of both the machines and the owners kind of sums up our industry.
We wish them well in the coming years.
groundstaff Spot on!
Or not, as the case may be!
Our occasional, free to enter ‘Spot the Ball’ competition made an appearance online on a couple of occasions during this summer.
The eventual winner, as voted for by Pitchcare members from a shortlist of four, was Daniel Dumbrill, Assistant Greenkeeper at West Sussex Golf Club, who described his image as; “early morning sunshine through the trees at the back of the 4th green”.
Daniel also wins a £100 Pitchcare gift voucher.
In addition to each monthly prize, all the monthly winners will then qualify for entry into an end of year competition, with photographic equipment to the value of £500 for the overall winner.
So, start snapping and have fun. You never know, you might just win yourself a very nice prize in the process. (T&Cs apply).
6 I PC AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2014
The first, to coincide with Wimbledon fortnight, featured a game of tennis at Bowring Park in Wellington, Shropshire.
Jim Simpson, Head Greenkeeper at Borstal Sports & Social Club in Rochester, Kent was the closest to the centre of the ball and he wins a £50 Pitchcare Gift Voucher.
This was followed by a Commonwealth Games ‘Find the Jack’ in a photograph taken at Walney Island Bowls Club near Barrow in Furness during a club roll-up.
This one proved much more difficult, with the closest - and he wasn’t close! - being Scott Bryan, a groundsman at Uppingham School in Rutland, who also wins a £50 Pitchcare Gift Voucher.
There’ll be further opportunities to play Spot the Ball over the coming months to coincide with major sporting events, both here in the UK and further afield. (T&Cs apply).

The ECB Cricket Operations Manager, Alan Fordham has commended county cricket groundsmen on the surfaces produced this season, especially with the intensive rotation of one day and longer format fixtures in this year’s schedule.
The ECB’s Alan Fordham singles out the groundstaff for praise during NatWest T20Blast finals day draw
Speaking to Sky’s Ian Ward during the draw for the NatWest T20 Blast Finals Day, he said; “we should make mention of the groundstaff all around the country. Average scores in the twenty over format have been 164, which is ten above what we have had in previous seasons. It’s been a really fantastic effort and we can’t ask for too much more.”
