Training & Development “ Work-based Apprentices rewarded
There really has never been a better time to advance your knowledge, skills and career prospects within the turf industry
“I researched colleges on the internet and found Myerscough College. I came to the UK to visit BTME in Harrogate to learn and find out about Sportsturf Courses. The team at Myerscough were superb and assisted me every step of the way. Following a successful VISA application, I enrolled at Myerscough College in September 2012.”
“Since then, I have never looked back. Despite the language and cultural barriers, the team at the College provided the support I needed to complete my studies. Myerscough College has fantastic industry links and, in the summer of 2013, I had the privilege of working in Rotterdam as an Assistant Groundsman at Stadium Feyenoord which was an amazing experience, allowing me to put much of my studies into practical use. It’s fantastic to graduate and I am so pleased that my parents have flown over from Japan to attend the ceremony.”
“My ambition is to work full-time as a Head Groundsman at one of the world’s top sporting venues. Following my graduation, I am returning to Japan to begin the next phase in my working life. I am convinced that my experience at Myerscough College, gaining my FdSc qualification and my time spent at Feyenoord FC will help to make my dreams come true.”
The college delivers a wide range of HE provision in Sportsturf both Full/Part- Time and Online. Please contact us for more details and entry requirements.
Chris Pickles with Assistant Principal Peter Caney and Paul Bradshaw – Head Groundsman at Burnley Football Club
For the first time this year, the College Award Ceremonies saw the introduction of specific categories for our Work-based Learners on Apprenticeship programmes across the country.
Competition for the awards in Sportsturf was particularly tough with over 150 successful graduates in the last academic year. We would like to congratulate all our successful achievers and wish them well with their future studies and careers within the turf industry. We would also like to take this opportunity to focus on our prize winners and celebrate their success, talent and commitment to their studies.
Where available, click on the augmented reality link to find out more about their apprenticeship experience.
Apprentice Groundsman of the Year
The Groundsman Awards were sponsored by Pitchcare and the winners were Chris Pickles from Burnley Football Club for the Intermediate Level 2 programme and Neil Rose from Oakham School for the Advanced Level 3 programme.
On receiving his award Chris said, “It’s great to receive this award and I would like to thank Paul and the team at Burnley FC for giving me the chance and for their support during this Apprenticeship.
I first came to Burnley FC during my Year 10 work experience placement, and it’s fantastic to now be working full time at the club. Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to find jobs, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for this type of career."
Neil Rose with Assistant Principal Peter Caney and Deputy Groundsman Mark Petit – Oakham School
Neil’s Work-based Tutor, Martyn Lumb, said, “Neil is a worthy winner simply because of the amount of hard work he put into the course. Neil gathered a huge catalogue of photos and videos, and he completed all the underpinning knowledge units months ahead of schedule, and to an exceptionally high standard.
The estimating project was particularly good and he has gained an excellent understanding of Health and Safety issues. Excellent work and well done.”
It’s great to receive this award and I would like to thank Paul and the team at Burnley FC for giving me the chance and for their support during this Apprenticeship
