Home On The Range.

Last summer, photographer Danette and her husband Dan had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend the season with their dogs, Myles and Kobe, living and traveling the Wild West. Their homebase was Yellowstone National Park, volunteering as park rangers while camping and living in their cozy RV. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here is a photo essay of some of the sites this family encountered along their amazing journey. Where seldom is heard a discouraging word, and the skies are not cloudy all day.

After weeks of living in the park and following the

six foot leash rule, Myles was more than happy to run some wiggles out at the old airport in West Yellowstone, Montana, an hour’s drive from Canyon Village.

Myles and Kobe impersonating Lewis and Clark. Mi tse a-da-z (Rock Yellow River) is the name the Minnetaree Tribe gave what is now called Yellowstone River. Through many translations by various explor- ers, the formal name became Yellowstone for both the river and the park.

Dust in the wind. We were told about the old airport as an unofficial place to bring the dogs for a run. But open fields in Montana are quite different than Pinellas County. Although the boys had fun, within a short time we encountered a loose dog from the neighborhood (not uncommon), shots fired (an out- door local shooting range on the edge of the field), ATV's from the National Forest trails that start at this spot. Oh, and dry, hay-like grass. As the saying goes, "We're not in Kansas anymore!"

Sunset at the turn-out for Cascade Lake (heading west to

Norris). It would be lovely if Myles was as intent on the sunset as we were trying to be. No, it was chipmunks and ground squirrels that had his attention. Being aware of your surroundings is important in Yellowstone National Park. At this same turnout the next night, we had to put the boys in the car because of a passing coyote in the field.
