Y DAUGHTER is of an age where the only internet technology that she can remember is really wi-fi. I try to explain


dial-up to her and she thinks it is something out of the dark ages. I love technology because I still believe that the good outweighs the bad. I am a prolific Tweeter, much to my husbands amusement as he asks me frequently whether I tweet my every waking thought. My reply is, only some of my more sensible thoughts. I have not done any solid research in this area, but I am convinced that I get more responses to the strange food that I eat on trains as opposed to how I vote in the House of Lords. I don’t often get a lot of abuse on social


media but it does come, and I accept that most of it is part of the deal for choosing to be involved in Politics. Much of it I can laugh off. I

had to be slightly amused when someone launched a tirade at me and then told me he felt ‘duty bound’ to tell me that I was ‘stoopid’. I don’t find it funny that anyone may struggle with spelling, but the rest of the communication was so beautifully crafted that it must have been an auto correct gone wrong But technology when it is used well is


something to behold. My daughter takes something like Skype for granted. At her age we had a few sci-fi films that showed what one day might be possible. I am not sure that you could count Blakes Seven as part of that, although the ‘portable’ computer Orac (really just a perspex box with some coloured wires in it), could communicate and make decisions. I always thought it was strange that something that was meant to be amazingly intelligent, had a box that
