News Fun day for Bearsted heroes

EVERYONE was a hero at this year’s Bearsted and Thurnham Carnival & Fayre as mums, dads, grannies and granddads came along to support the children tak- ing part in the annual parade. The much-threatened rain held

off for most of the day, allowing everyone to enjoy the displays of singing and dancing while brows- ing dozens of stalls supporting charities, selling their wares and generally getting into the swing of the afternoon. Major Jack Crossley, from the

16th Air Assault Brigade, based in Chichester, officially opened the Fayre, following the carnival pro- cession from Madginford to Bearsted Green, and was among the day’s judges awarding prizes to the imaginative fancy-dress entrants as well as helping select the Carnival Princess. Neve Benson-Dale (8) from Port

Close, Bearsted, a pupil at Roseacre School, was crowned Princess for the coming year, with Madginford pupils Helen Cham- bers and Alexia Robert her deputies (pictured). Best fancy dress went to Lucas Durling (7), the eight-legged spi- der, with 18-month Otis Ashby

from Mallings Drive, in second place with his impression of Clark Kent. In third placewas Spidergirl ErinWoledge (15 months). Merlin Clubs won first prize for

its carnival entry,My Family Hero, having spoken to family members to find out their stories and contri- bution to life – ranging from a policeman to a midwife. The Everyday Heroes from Madginford Pre-School, again re- flecting all emergency services and those contributing to the smooth running of everyday life, were voted runners-up. In third place were the British

Red Cross nurses from the 5th Bearsted Brownies. First place for theatrical content

went to the 1st and 2nd Bearsted Rainbows for their representation of the RNLI.

Highly commended was the 3rd Bearsted Brownies, the Friday Fal- con Beavers and the Three Bears Pre-School, who sang London’s Burning as they brought their fiery cavalcade into the village. The best-dressed stall on the

theme heroes went to Bearsted Green WI, whose cake stall was ablaze with blooms of poppies. This year’s fayre raised funds for

the Bearsted & Thurnham Cricket Club, to help finance its artificial wicket, and Kent Scouts for the ren- ovation of its activity centre at Lower Grange Farm.
