The Villager Roof scam
RESIDENTS are being warned to be aware of bogus workmen claim- ing to carry out roof repairs. Community warden
Adam
McKinley has been contacted by a local resident scammed into part- ing with £500 after being told their roof was at risk. Two men knocked on the door to say they were checking to see if roofs complied with their 10-year guarantee. They then ripped off some roof felt, claimed it was falling off and offered to patch it up for £500. Trading Standards want to hear from anyone with information about similar scams – or contact Adam directly.
He said: “Remember, always ask for ID and if you are unsure, do not answer the door and call the police on 101.”
Five thes
THERE were five crimes commit- ted in Bearsted during May. On May 25, various tools were stolen from a garage at the rear of a property in Roundwell. Access was gained via the door which was not locked.
The previous week, there was an attempted break-in at a property on the Bearsted Green Business Park, where the owner noticed a door to the store was damaged. On May 2, a number plate was taken from a car parked in Bearsted Road; on May 15, a property in The Street was entered and various items were taken and on May 16, a satnav was stolen from a van parked in Spot Lane.
Warden wed
WEDDING bells have been ringing for Bearsted’s community warden Adam McKinley.
Adam (29) married fiancée Tania
Pattenden, from Upchurch, in a cer- emony at Upchurch Golf Club, on June 7, before departing on honey- moon to Rhodes.
At its meeting on June 10, the parish council accepted a compet- itive tender from Matta to resur- face the entire play area with material known as Matta, which has already been used by Maid- stone Council on its play area at Penenden Heath. The work was scheduled to begin on July 9 and the play area should be re-opened soon after.
The play area on The Green was
closed last November on the in- structions of Maidstone Council because, unexpectedly, the exist- ing play surface began to break up in a number of places and it was considered too dangerous for chil- dren to keep using it. Discussions with various con- tractors revealed that the existing play surface had been laid some 10 years ago over a grossly inade- quate sub-base and the council,
therefore, faced the prospect of having the entire area excavated so that a proper sub-base could be laid to support the play surface. Rather than commit itself to such expenditure, the council in- vestigated other surfacing materi- als and found the Matta surface is much less expensive and more durable. We think that the chil- dren who use the play area will very much like the new surface.
No to housing proposal Activity day
FOLLOWING strong objections from the parish council, its three borough councillors and from sev- eral surrounding parish councils, Maidstone Council has excluded from its draft local plan a pro- posed housing site at Lilk Meadow and the extensive proposed em- ployment site at M20 Junction 8. The parish council will, how-
ever, closely follow what happens next as it is expected that the de-
velopers involved will object to the Local plan when it comes before a government planning inspector next year.
An appeal has already been lodged against Maidstone Coun- cil’s decision to refuse planning permission for industrial develop- ment at J8 and it is known that re- vised plans are being drawn up for housing development at Lilk Meadow.
Suitably attired staff and children from Three Bears Pre-School entertained the crowd at the Bearsted & Thurnham Carnival and Fayre with rendi- tions of London’s Burning.
Remembering those who served LOCAL history buffs will be fascinated by a new book, backed by the parish council, which has been reprinted to commemorate the centenary of Britain’s entry into The Great War. Bearsted Parish Council recently gave a grant to help author Kate Kersey, whose book was originally published in 2005, record the details of all those who served in both world wars from the communities of Bearsted and Thurnham.
The new edition continues to record the names of all who served, but the
contents have been revised and expanded to more than 330 pages. It in- cludes various local press reports, parish magazine extracts, oral history and treasured photographs of family members; some of whom ‘went to serve their King and Country’ but did not return. All profits from the book will go to HM Services charities. Dutifulness and Endurance – Bearsted and Thurnham in two world wars – 1914-1918, 1939-1945 is due out in August, priced £16 to residents of Bearsted and Thurnham, or £22.50 including postage. For further details, or to reserve a copy before publication, please contact Kate Kersey on 01622 730444.

A LITERAL ‘free for all’ will take place on Bearsted Green on Tues- day August 26. Some 15 groups representing sport and dance activ- ities around the area have already signed up for the annual Activity Day, organised by community war- den Adam McKinley.
The day is aimed at children – and adults – aged two and up- wards when they can watch groups performing and take part, com- pletely free of charge, even on the rides and bouncy castle.
The only possible expenditure will be on food and drink. There is still the chance to sign up for a spot on The Green for the event, which takes place from 10am to 3.30pm. Contact Adam on 07813 712105.
Families can just turn up on the day and take part.
Public welcome
THE public are reminded that they are always welcome to attend all meetings of the council that are held in public. This includes the full council on the second Tuesday in each month and all of its com- mittees, which meet at various dates.
If any member of the public wishes to address the full council or one of its committees on a par- ticular issue and have it placed on the agenda so that it can be dis- cussed by councillors, they should submit a request in writing to the clerk at least seven days before the meeting is to take place.
Members of the public are also
welcome to speak on any matter at the beginning of any council meet- ing but, without giving the clerk the seven days notice in writing, the matter cannot be discussed by councillors on the night.
